Chapter 152 :  Shall I push a little further?

Sadguru will keep a watch over his devotees and protect them as eye lashes protect eyes. This incident is about a person whose acquaintance with Gurunatha dated back to more than 25 years. Still, when I spoke to him I did not find any ego or excessiveness in his behavior instead he seemed to be floating in eternal bliss.

He started like...” Long time ago, we were making arrangements for a marriage in our family. We needed coconut leaf buds and other items to erect a ‘chappara’(Thatched roof erected in courtyard for marriages and other ceremonies), we spoke to one person in Sakharaya Patna and went there to collect them. The farm belonged to Gurunatha but at that time we did not know him as such. Once the items were loaded he said I will also come till Chickmaglur. I asked him to be seated in front. But, he said “I don’t want to come in between you brothers” and made some space in the back and sat there. His words about not coming between brothers left an impression in my mind. When we reached Chickmaglur we heard that the bride was suffering from high fever and has been admitted to a hospital. Coming to know about this Gurunatha asked us.. “The bride is a step mother’s daughter isn’t it?” we nodded. He continued “It seems you have not bought a wedding saree for her mother”. We immediately bought one saree and kept and the bride recovered miraculously and the marriage went on without any hitch.

Probably four years after this, I was coming from Shivamogga towards my town on my bike. When I was about one kilometer away from Sakharaya Patna the bike broke down and l was towing it. Then someone from behind asked ‘Sir, shall I push the bike?’ I said yes and without even looking back sat on the bike seat. That person would have pushed for almost a kilometer, then he asked “shall I push a little further? I told him, thanks, I can manage from here but still did not bother to look back at him.

A few years after this, Gurunatha reminded me about the incident and told me it was him who was pushing my bike.

His recollection of events was flowing like a stream of water that I did not want to stop/disturb.

“A few events like this made our friendship even deeper. As I did not have any clue about what ‘Guru’ means I was treating him as a friend. A little later I had to travel I had to attend a relative’s marriage near Shivamogga, as Gurunatha wanted to go to Sagara (a nearby town) he tagged along with us and we started in a car. First we visited his relative’s house and then went to attend the marriage. Gurunatha had bought two garlands and kept it in the car we did not know the reason behind it.

As Gurunatha was in dhoti we did not want anyone to humiliate him so asked him to be sitting in the car while we went inside the marriage hall. Inside the marriage hall we were making fun of the bride’s father as we knew him to be a miser and quite peculiar in his mannerisms. Suddenly, we saw Gurunatha coming inside with two garlands, and got worried. Gurunatha asked the bride and the groom to exchange garlands, which they did. It was an unusual sight to see the bride and groom exchange garlands before they entered the mantap that too in front of the strangers.

I told Gurunatha we’ll go to a hotel and eat there. But, Gurunatha said, “Having attended a marriage we should not leave without having food there”. I kept quiet. Then Gurunatha went to the kitchen with a plantain leaf and asked for food almost like a beggar does “Ayya please serve us something, we are hungry”. The cooks served for just four of us. After that everyone flocked Gurunatha. The bride’s father who was an astrologer appeared from nowhere gave a very small dakshina though he was miser along with tambula (betel leaves) and vanished.

Through these incidents Gurunatha had shown, though he held a very high stature, he did not fall into any of the usual stereotypes and his simplicity shone always.

Chapter 151 :  What is astrology?

' Once a couple and their daughter had come to Gurunatha’s house they discussed their problems with Gurunatha, got some remedies from him. When they were just about to leave, the mother proudly told Gurunatha that her daughter knows astrology and has learned palmistry as well.

Gurunatha stretched his hand and said, “Oh then why don’t you tell me what my future holds for me” with a smile. The girl looked at his hand started saying something.

Just then her father got a call, after attending the phone call, he seemed to be quite disturbed and in a hurry to leave. He had got news that his father was not well. Looking at his mannerisms and urgency Gurunatha arranged them to be dropped to the bus stand in a devotee’s car but insisted they should take a bus from there and not hire a car.

After they had left, Gurunatha turned to his devotees and asked... “What is astrology?” answering himself he said, ”astrology is not just a skill that anybody can learn, it is not meant to fleece innocent people by suggesting various rituals to be done, it is an art of making things happen as they ought to be by the power of sadhana, giving a ray of hope to those in distress”.

Then he told about the couple who had just left, he said. “Her father has passed away, I wanted to make sure they don’t hire a car and ask the driver to drive fast to reach their home early”. Who is responsible if anything unpleasant were to happen on the way? That is the reason I asked them to take a bus.

I bowed to Gurunatha for the farsightedness he had shown yet again.

Chapter 150 :  Beesekallu (A stone carved as a grind)

She was a native of Kadur and her husband used to work in the court, recently they "I have moved to Bangalore. While talking to me she recounted her first meeting with
Gurunatha.

“Our mother-in-law was not well; I had gone to ask about that. Gurunatha was sitting near the tomb behind Shiva temple.

He said.. “come, I was expecting you, the seer of the advaitha peetha had given me one mantra, l was thinking whom I should give it to, don’t open it, just keep it in your puja room and worship it, if you feel like opening it, don’t open at night”. With these words he gave me a small piece of wrapped paper. I have preserved it till this day.

Meanwhile, I was having weird dreams at night, when asked about this Gurunatha had said, you were destined to die at the age of 45; l have deferred it for you. You need not worry. I did not understand a word of what he said.

In another instance, I was ill and was being hospitalized; Gurunatha called me and said, “Why you are going without turning back?”

I replied, “Sir, it seems I have hernia, doctors are going to operate on me”

Gurunatha said, “You don’t have hernia, there has been a small mistake while doing caesarian section, you buy and keep a Beesekallu (A stone carved as a grind) at your house, you do not require any surgery.” It happened as he had said and l was discharged without being operated.

But, in hindsight, it would have been better if I had died first. But again, Gurunatha had once said, “If the husband dies first, the wife can overcome the grief. But, if the wife dies it will be very difficult for the husband to live.” I keep consoling myself by remembering his words.

A few months after my husband had died Gurunatha had come to our house. I asked him “Why my husband died without enjoying any pleasures of life?

Gurunatha replied.. “What do you mean by pleasures of life?” Your husband did not take any bribe. Everyone liked him, due to his noble qualities he has gone very far, you should not cry and call him back.

‘I have seen the God’

Before coming to our house, Gurunatha had gone to the office where my husband was working. He made his disciples chant some Veda mantras and distribute sweets to his co-workers and some inmates. During this one of the under trials refused to accept the sweet offered by the devotees and asked some poison to be given instead.

The devotee who offered him sweet said, “If you need poison, you should talk to him, the one sitting in the car (pointing at Gurunatha)”

The accused approached Gurunatha and told him, “I have been jailed without committing any crime, even the God did not heed to my prayers”

Gurunatha assured him and told him that he would be released soon and made him eat the sweets. Before Gurunatha and the devotees left the place, news came that, that under trial has been released.

He was ecstatic, he cried and shouted, he was heard calling his people and telling them, ‘I have seen the God, I will be free now’.

How merciful is our Sadguru! Having narrated the above, she concluded quoting what Gurunatha had told her, “Do not trust anyone in this world. But, never lose faith in Lord Eashwara”

Chapter 149 :  The birth chart won’t come in the way of marriage

The power of a Guru cannot be described in words. It is without a beginning and an end. I had probably seen this devotee last time around 2010. I saw the same devotion and intensity in them when I recently met him to record their experiences.

The lady who was waiting for my arrival was in tears even before we started our conversation. She started like this...

Probably about 23 years ago I met Gurunatha for the first time; he had come to our house. He had bowed to my mother-in-law and also blessed us. Back then, his attire used to be like the rest of us.

Our problems started when my daughter turned 19. An astrologer who had seen her birth chart had said she had ‘kuja dosha’ (a combination in birth chart where Mars is placed in the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house in the Ascendant, considered inauspicious) we had to shell out about seventy thousand rupees and do some rituals to overcome the effects else it was difficult to marry her off. This gave us sleepless nights as we did not have so much money then.

“During this time I attended a marriage in Chickmaglur with my father-in-law. I saw a bearded man scolding everyone and yet many people had gathered around him. I bowed to him gripped by fear. He said “the birth chart won’t come in the way of the marriage”. When I was about to leave the marriage hall it occurred to me, what he was hinting at. Later my daughter got an alliance and the marriage took place with no sweat as per Guru’s words.” At this point she paused, probably recounting a few more incidents.

A little later, she hurriedly started her next experience as if she would want it recorded before she forgot any of the details. ” Before I married and settled down in Hassan, all of us were ardent devotees of Sai Baba. When ever I went to his ashram, I had this practice of writing down my questions in a book which was kept there. Later
on when I met Gurunatha, he answered the questions I had written there. This surprised me very much. But, I still have not understood what he meant when he cryptically told me...” the Guru in this body is not your Guru”

Generally, if I had any questions in my mind I somehow got answers for those from Gurunatha. This has continued till date. Though Gurunatha is taking good care of us I feel bad for not being able to execute his words... He had once said, ‘You need to take care of five responsibilities of your house’. In another instance he had said, ‘Your property is like a fruit that is kept locked in a cupboard, it rots there, not being of any use to anyone’. Till date I have not understood what he meant by that.

A few years after my daughter’s marriage I met Gurunatha and told him that I wanted to have a grandchild. He had assured me that, if I waited I shall have at least three. A few days later, I was standing in front of Gurunatha’s photo when a relative enquired about my daughter’s health. I told him everything’s fine; it is just that she has not given any indication of motherhood.

Then the relative replied, “Gurunatha has sent me to inform you about the good news
Hearing that, I just kept staring at Gurunatha’s photo and in my joy did not offer him anything. When I realized my mistake, I checked with my neighbor who happened to be related to him about his arrival. He said he had not come there. Then I checked with my father-in- law. He said he also did not see anyone come in. Then who is the one who gave me the good news? I have not yet found an answer.

Later my daughter called up and confirmed the news, I had already heard. With tears in her eyes she recounted her last meeting with Gurunatha.”lt was probably around the middle of 2010, I went to his residence in a relative’s car. He asked me ...” You saw a car coming; you jumped in and came here?” I silently bowed my head.

Then he came a little close to me and almost whispered... “I will climb a bier and go to the graveyard, will you accompany me?“ My mind turned blank and I could not think of anything. I did not know if I had committed any mistakes and he was scolding me for that. It is good if he keeps scolding us as we would know the mistakes we are committing and hence they will become our grace.

Two days after that conversation, I heard Gurunatha had left this world”. Tears rolled down her cheeks.

She prayed aloud to Gurunatha,”Please keep this creature always near to you, wherever you are”. I wished I had that devotion and those thoughts of complete surrender like her when I left that place.

Chapter 148 :  Amma

As probably mentioned earlier, I used to call Gurunatha’s wife as Amma (mother in Kannada). Amma also showered a motherly affection on me. Whenever the work pressure at the house rose, Amma used to ask me if I was tired and offered coffee.

Once during winter, I had cracked heels and it was so bad that I could barely walk. Still, I was somehow managing to finish the jobs that I used to do regularly. (At Gurunatha’s residence nobody directed anyone else as to what work they should be doing.) As Amma saw me suffering, she got some hot water and salt and asked me to keep my feet in that for some time. The treatment was quite effective, I still remember the way she scolded me and made me agree to have the treatment.

In another instance, Amma was making chapathis. l was going around the house doing various chores I had. She called me and made me sit near the place where padukas were kept, gave me chapathis and milk saying..”Everyone who comes here will get his/her job done and leave, except for you who don’t seem to have anything in mind apart from the work you do here. Looking after you is our responsibility”.

The affection I got in that house is beyond words and I still miss those days.

Gurunatha could not tolerate anyone not treating their parents well; including the seer from the famous advaitha peetha. Once the seer was on a Vijay yatra, Gurunatha had made arrangements to receive him at a particular place. But, due to some reason the seer changed his route at the last minute.

When Gurunatha met him, he advised the seer that,”a mother comes ahead of any yathra”. Even if you are sanyasi, looking after your mother is still your responsibility. Without a mother there shall be nothing in the world. The seer silently continued his yatra. Gurunatha went further to warn him when he came back it was not sure if he will be able to see his mother and he might have to take five more births to have the same person as his mother.

His words came true. The day of seer’s return from his yatra was the last day his mother lived.
