Chapter 148 : Amma
As probably mentioned earlier, I
used to call Gurunatha’s wife as Amma (mother in Kannada). Amma also showered a
motherly affection on me. Whenever the work pressure at the house rose, Amma
used to ask me if I was tired and offered coffee.
Once during winter, I had cracked
heels and it was so bad that I could barely walk. Still, I was somehow managing
to finish the jobs that I used to do regularly. (At Gurunatha’s residence
nobody directed anyone else as to what work they should be doing.) As Amma saw
me suffering, she got some hot water and salt and asked me to keep my feet in
that for some time. The treatment was quite effective, I still remember the way
she scolded me and made me agree to have the treatment.
In another instance, Amma was making
chapathis. l was going around the house doing various chores I had. She called
me and made me sit near the place where padukas were kept, gave me chapathis
and milk saying..”Everyone who comes here will get his/her job done and leave,
except for you who don’t seem to have anything in mind apart from the work you
do here. Looking after you is our responsibility”.
The affection I got in that house is
beyond words and I still miss those days.
Gurunatha could not tolerate anyone
not treating their parents well; including the seer from the famous advaitha
peetha. Once the seer was on a Vijay yatra, Gurunatha had made arrangements to
receive him at a particular place. But, due to some reason the seer changed his
route at the last minute.
When Gurunatha met him, he advised
the seer that,”a mother comes ahead of any yathra”. Even if you are sanyasi,
looking after your mother is still your responsibility. Without a mother there
shall be nothing in the world. The seer silently continued his yatra. Gurunatha
went further to warn him when he came back it was not sure if he will be able
to see his mother and he might have to take five more births to have the same
person as his mother.
His words came true. The day of
seer’s return from his yatra was the last day his mother lived.
