Chapter 156 :  Last words

This incident occurred before Gurunatha left his physical body. Gurunatha was staying in Chickmaglur that day. A devotee who was very close to Gurunatha was very insistent about one thing. He asked Gurunatha... ”today I should get to know who you are, what are your internal state and other details”.

Gurunatha kept quiet for a while but the devotee insisted. Then Gurunatha took him to an adjoining room where just two of them could talk in private. (Only an excerpt of that conversation is given below)

To all those houses I have been at least once, even Yama (the lord of death) cannot enter without my permission. Even the Pancha Bhutas ( the five basic elements) cannot do anything without my consent. Whoever prays to me with true devotion, will have their wish granted. That power has been given to me by the Lord Eashwara himself. This will be my last birth.

Likewise, a few more words which Gurunatha had said just before he left his body are still ringing in my ears.

“On the 11th day from the day I leave this body behind, a sanyasi will come from the north. He will tell you who am I, after that those of you who believe in Guru as a physical body may follow him, those of you who believe in Guru as a thought can stay here”

It happened exactly like that. Who all went, who all stayed? The true devotees must ponder over it.

 “Parisamapthi”

Swimming in an endless ocean called Guru is a very difficult task. I don’t even want a streak of imagination that would tell me I am floating on it. It is my firm belief that I got this small opportunity to serve my Guru with ‘Pada Seva ‘as a result of good deeds done over many of my past births.

Pada seva means walking in the path shown by Guru with your eyes closed ( with a firm faith and belief in it). But, here I did not even walk by myself. My master took me along his path with hardly any effort from my side. I submit all imperfections along this journey to him.

Recounting what Gurunatha told me a few days before he left this world, I am putting a short break to this writing.

“Once I leave this body behind, the power in the Samadhi (tomb) will be many times more than the power this body has now”... these words are still ringing in my ears. Even after recording all these experiences there are countless experiences which will probably go unrecorded. One thing is very well established from these experiences though... Once a Guru holds our hands, he will be with us for numerous births and make sure we cross the Bhava Sagara (cycle of birth and death). This task alone gives him a lot of pleasure.

Guru is not a physical body, it is pure thought, and if Guru leaves his body behind, it is like changing one shirt with another or settling in infinity by crossing the boundaries of finite world. Leaving the body does not mean parting ways with us. But it is a way of getting close to everyone with a pure thought. Preserving the purity of our body and mind that have been touched by Guru is something which we should all be doing without fail.

“A disciple should be such that a Guru should come looking for him and not the other way round” these were Gurunatha’s words.

Walking on the path set by Guru is the real tribute to him. That is called ‘Chaitanya Aradhane’ (offering tributes to the energy left behind). This must become the real characteristic of everyone who calls himself a disciple. Only then the purpose with which Guru came to this world will be fulfilled. This responsibility lies on each of the
disciple, if we keep that in our minds our lives will attain fulfillment.

Chapter 155 :  Aghoreshwara

Once when traveling with Gurunatha near Sagara, we repeatedly saw a signboard called ‘Aghoreshwara temple’ then Gurunatha said, what is that Aghoreshwara temple turn there, let us go and see. When we were there we were surprised at the emotions shown by Gurunatha on seeing the linga. Even for the rest of us it looked very special.

“I have done puja here for two days” said Gurunatha; making us wonder if there was any place where he had not been.

In another instance, we went to a temple called Sharabheshwara temple near Shivamogga. It is an Anjaneya temple where the idol has manifested itself in a stone. Within the Garbha gudi (sanctum, place where the idol I kept in a temple) there is only enough place for one person to stand. An elderly priest welcomed us into the temple. He accepted our offerings. While tying the garland we had given to the doorway leading to Garbha gudi it was always falling off. By this sign the priest realized some special person has entered the temple. He repeatedly asked Gurunatha to reveal his identity.

At last Gurunatha said, “It’s me Venkatachala, 30 years before I had performed puja here for 6 months along with you”. Hearing this, the elderly priest was overcome by emotions, with tears in his eyes and folded hands he said to Gurunatha “Today is probably the luckiest day of my life”.

It is impossible to describe the acts of our omnipresent Gurunatha. Isn’t it?

Chapter 154 :  If only I could get a Guru like that...

He started recounting another experience; this was during the time when he met Gurunatha for the first time.

“A few years ago, I read a book about the saints in Himalaya. While reading about their life, and the miracles they had performed I felt, if only I had a Guru like that. Within a few days of that, I met my Gurunatha. He proved that with an incident too. Once we went to a devotee’s house in Chickmaglur. A person in the family was suffering from smallpox. Gurunatha was moved by his suffering. He encircled the person three times and left the place. Later both of us came near Dantaramakki Lake. Both of us were sitting there talking for a long time. Suddenly I could see Gurunatha’s body develop small pox eruptions like the person we saw earlier. Within a few minutes he was very tired and was in great pain as he slept there.”

“Hours passed by and he slowly started recovering, the blisters seemed to subside, Gurunatha started talking again. At about the same time we heard the person we met earlier was recovering as well. This reminded me of a similar miracle I had read earlier about a Himalayan Sadhu who cured the small pox of a child. I considered myself lucky for wishing to get a similar Guru and getting one exactly like that almost immediately.”

This Charanadasa looked at him as if to suggest, can you share a few more experiences... he smiled and started again.

After I got a son, Gurunatha asked me to start looking for an alliance for my sister. Within months we got a suitable alliance and fixed it. Meanwhile, I went to attend a relative’s function along with my sister. Gurunatha came to know about this and advised me not to do it again, “Once the marriage has been fixed your sister is not yours anymore, even to go out of the house she must seek consent from her would be husband. It would be awkward if he calls you when she is not at home, what will you tell him? If you tell him she has gone out, what he might think. You need to think about all these things”.

That day, I realized how complicated ‘dharma sookshma’ (rules laid down by the scriptures for model life) is...

Later just prior to the day of her marriage, I locked up my house, deputed a guard and went to Mangalore. The same day evening, I got a call from Gurunatha, who said,” I am in your house. For all that you have done for me... guarding your house in your absence becomes my duty isn’t it?” and laughed. I did not know how to react and just kept quiet.

Until I made arrangements to host about 25 people there and come back, he was guarding our house. He continues to be here in our breaths... with these words he concluded his experience and bowed to the padukas he had kept in his house.
