Chapter 147 :  Even if the devotee forgets his word..

This silk merchant was an old friend of this Charanadasa. However, till very recently I never had an opportunity to discuss with him about his experiences with Gurunatha. When we met recently he started recounting his experiences like this...

“Probably it was in 1997, I met Gurunatha for the first time. I had gone with one of my relatives and I had no belief in him. But, the sequence of incidents that happened after that made me completely surrender myself to him.”

“As soon as he saw me he said, “You seem to have pain in your legs isn’t it?” With those words he gave me two bananas. That was the last day; I never suffered that pain again. Prior to that I could not sit on the floor for even 10 minutes, with one move he had changed the speed and direction of my life, I am still trying to understand the power of the word “Guru”.

In another instance, Gurunatha had come to our town and from there he was going to my wife’s town. Though Gurunatha specifically told me not to come there, I took my family along in my car there. Left my family there and went to Sakharaya Patna with Gurunatha. He kept me for 4 days with him and sent me back. On my return I got my family from her native place and was returning home. My kid who was on my lap went to the rear seat. Immediately after that a speeding truck hit our car head on. The car was mangled but all of us survived. I returned to Gurunatha’s house later then he told me...”Ayya I saw blood in your car, so I asked you not to bring it.” My faith and respect for him grew even further after he saved us from this mishap.

In another instance, he had come to my house. He asked my daughter who was in 8th standard then to sit on his lap and gave her some milk and sugar and told her she will secure 98% in 10th and 97% in 12th. Thanks to his grace today she is studying MBBS. When he was at our house unable to decide what to offer him, I offered him a silver tumbler we had in our house. lmmediately he said, “this was a gift from your sister, you take your sister’s consent and offer this to the seer of advaitha peetha and request him that he should drink milk in this at least once.” But, due to some reason I could not visit the advaitha peetha.

Later Gurunatha made arrangements at the advaitha peetha so that I could offer the tumbler to the seer and asked me to go over there. I had never seen a Guru who would not just stop at making a suggestion but go out of his way to make sure it is implemented even when the devotee has forgotten about it.

“I may not trust Gods at times. But, I cannot live without him. Even today he is still in our breath” he concluded.

Chapter 146 :  A friend or a Guru or Both?

I had faint memories of seeing that person in Gurunatha’s house. He looked a like a simple and soft spoken person. Recently, we met each other through his sister. The meeting was very important for me because he was a classmate of our Gurunatha during his childhood. When I asked him to share his childhood memories he started like this..

“Just being a childhood friend of such a yogi itself has made my life worthwhile”. He became silent for a few minutes with these words, probably reliving those old days in his mind. A few minutes later he started again.

Kadur is my native place; my mother was from Sakharaya Patna. So, during vacation time we used to meet each other. You could call him naughty but he was never aggressive. We used to play a ball game called ‘Lagge’ and once I happened to fall down, injured myself and cried. After about 3 decades when we met he recalled this
incident and made fun of me. Once we played marakothi (a game of climbing trees) in a friend’s mango grove after we exhausted the eatables we had brought, we plucked and ate mangoes. But he did not eat even one. His calm and collectiveness, the quickness with which he could resolve mathematical riddles would make anyone envy him.

Whenever a function was there in any of our houses, we all used to get together and work, later eat together; Sharing one another’s joys and sorrows had become an integral part of our life then. Once he sent a word for me when in Bangalore and said “Ayya, it has been 14years since we met, I thought we should meet once. So, I sent a word.” It did not occur to my mind that my childhood friend has grown up to be a master of Vedas and an Avadhuta. Once I had a chance meeting with him at his sister’s house. But, until his sister introduced him to me I did not know who that sadhu was. He pulled me aside and made me eat sweet from his hands. Then it descended on me that he was my childhood friend and l was very thrilled.

Later, when I asked him about my son’s education, he said “who are you to educate him, the one who educates everyone is up there. Your son will get a job he likes and the salary shall also be good. He gave a little pause and then said, your son has to go to Gorakhpur on work. All that came true. From that day, I had become his devotee.”

In another instance, he called a scientist who had come with my son and told him...”Four of you will have to go to such...and such a city on such and such a date. But beware you should not take a flight on that date”. As advised he did not board the plane that day, the plane crashed at Arrakonam in Tamilnadu killing everyone aboard. Guru’s compassion had saved his life.

“Many a time I used to face a dilemma, when everyone around was addressing him with respect as a Guru, I was caught in between addressing him as a friend or as Guru. Unable to resolve this myself I brought it up with him. Then he explained quite meaningfully, “The word Guru can mean a teacher as well as a friend”. You are my friend, you can continue to address me the way you are doing now...Basically, all of us should be true to our inner self, so you be who you are..” .

Even after he left his body, his smiling face is etched in our minds. He is still with us and guides us when requested”. With these words he wiped his tears.

This incident reminded Charanadasa of what Gurunatha used to tell about being your real self...”Ayya, don’t do something to please someone or because someone else does it, whatever you do from your own instincts.. That is real”.

Chapter 145 :  This flower shall make you write everything

A boy who also happened to be Gurunatha’s distant relative was visiting Gurunatha’s residence very often. Their family’s financial status was very average. He had good relations with everyone at Gurunatha’s house.

Since I came to Gurunatha’s house, I knew him and his elder brother. Both were pious, quite reserved and would not talk much. Recently when I met him, he recounted one incident in his life with me like this...

“I was studying engineering then, I had one difficult subject, whatever I did, I could not grasp even a bit of it. During my exam time I learnt that Gurunatha had come to Bangalore, I met and bowed to him. As there were too many devotees I did not get an opportunity to talk to him. Meanwhile, Gurunatha sent all of us to do paduka puja at Mysore. It was I am when we returned. The following morning as soon as I got up, I went directly to Gurunatha and told him, “Gurunatha, today I have this exam. This subject I have not understood even a bit. How much ever I try, it does not seem to get into my head. I am confused what to do. I thus explained my helplessness.”

Then Gurunatha took a flower that was put on a photo of Chandra Shekhara Bharthi seer in that devotee’s house. Giving the flower to me... he said “just keep this flower with you, this flower will make you write everything”. With these words of assurance he sent me back.

I went to the exam without reading anything, I have no idea what I wrote, and I do remember I did write something though. But, I got good marks in the subject and passed it. Today if I am a lecturer it is because of Guru’s compassion only. He is with me in every step of my life. He concluded his experience with these words.

What this Charanadasa has observed over a period of time is that to all devotees Gurunatha used suggest... keep reciting ...”Chandrasheskhara Pahimam, Chandrashekhara Rakshamam” or keep writing it, He will make your path trouble-free.

Chapter 144 :  Accept the world as a Guru

All living and non living beings of this world are under the custody of the Guru. They will behave as per his instructions. If we try to show our ego and go against his wish, a disaster will be waiting to happen for us.

A lecturer used to visit Gurunatha’s house regularly. He was very friendly with Gurunatha. From time to time he would tell Gurunatha... “I want to write your life history (autobiography), please give me the permission to go-ahead”. Probably moved by his childlike stubbornness once Gurunatha agreed and said, “Ok, you can write”. Immediately the lecturer came back with a book and pen and started to write what Gurunatha said. This went on whenever Gurunatha was not surrounded by visitors.

Once Gurunatha called the lecturer and said, “By the time you come to 7th chapter, you will lose all your affection and love towards me and make an allegation against me and that will be the end, you will not be able to write beyond that. It shall end our friendship as well.”

As Gurunatha had said, he made false allegations against Gurunatha, fought and left. I was with Gurunatha when he visited the lecturer’s house in Bangalore for the last time. That day he greeted everyone with folded hands and never looked back in that direction. After about 2-3 years the lecturer probably realized his mistake and tried meeting Gurunatha again but was unable to do so.

This incident taught a couple of lessons to this Charanadasa.

With all the power Gurunatha had he could have easily stopped the lecturer from making any allegations against him in the first place or when the lecturer actually did make the allegations Gurunatha could have cursed him. But he did neither, he showed all of us that, in spite of having prior knowledge of all the events he is still bound to Eashwara’s rules and he experienced the whole sequence of events as a normal person would have.

Another thing, if someone commits a mistake, we should never scold him, the effects of his mistake themselves will make him realize his mistake and also warn us against committing such mistakes and be alert. So, in his own way he would have given us a valuable lesson. Gurunatha had walked his talk about... “Accept the world as a Guru, learn from it and move on”

Chapter 143 :  Honey bees and the yellow towel

Once in Banavara Sri Krishna Yogendra’s Jayanthi celebrations or aradhana was being organized. As usual disciples and other devotees had gathered there. As per Gurunatha’s instructions I had finished packing and sending groceries and other essential items to the program.

At Banavara as the puja and homa rituals finished, devotees started having their lunch and some were already leaving. Just then a big swarm of honey bees came out of nowhere and started biting the devotees. Some even got hospitalized.

Gurunatha heard about the incident from someone. He rushed to Banavara in a devotee’s car. Once there he took a towel and colored it yellow. He threw it towards the sky; the towel floated in air for some time and then came down. By that time all the honey bees had disappeared within a flash.

Gurunatha lived as commoner among us and showed how the pinnacle of Adhyatma can be reached by everyone through his own actions throughout his life. He looked as a commoner to common people and as an enlightened soul to the enlightenment seekers.

Once Gurunatha sitting with his devotees was telling them about how one’s life should be.

He said, ”See, never hurt anyone at anytime in your life, but make sure you are not hurt as well, perform every task that you get in front of you with fullest devotion and leave the fruits of that action/labor to God, your journey shall become very easy”.

When asked about family and bonds he had said “in your life, you should take good care of your parents, relatives, friends and everyone but make sure you are not getting attached to any of it. That is real Adhyatma.

In life we should be as a witness to everything. How a Peepal (fig) tree gives shelter to all without any prejudice, we should be like that. The Peepal tree gives its shade to everyone be it a sanyasi, a gambler, a thief or even a stray dog. It does not discriminate between the shelter seekers and does not expect anything in return. Just like that, we should be a witness to all the happenings of life while not being attached to anything in it.

In another instance, he had said, the stagnant water breeds germs and is not useful to anyone isn’t it? We should be like flowing water. Flowing water is always clean and usable. We should be like a sea, the sea never keeps anything thrown at it, and it will always throw things back along with its waves.

About accumulation of wealth, he said, in next moment anything can happen isn’t it? Then why should we save for tomorrow? Today’s this moment you should offer everything you have to Lord Shiva and live.

Gurunatha was against taking photographs, he believed photo spoils one’s inner beauty and excessive photographing decreases one’s life span. There were many instances where people forced Gurunatha to pose for a photograph; he obliged sometimes not wanting to hurt their feelings. But, they would eventually find that none of the photos will actually make it to the print.

Chapter 142 :  The supreme is the protector of all souls

Guru is ever responsive to the call of his devotees. If a devotee needs help and calls for his Guru no matter where he is, he will surely find his Guru there to help, Time, regional boundaries do not matter to Guru.

Once Gurunatha came suddenly to Bangalore from Sakharaya Patna, he reached his sister’s house and called up one of his distant relatives. He asked the relative to bring his two-wheeler and told him he has some work. As soon as the relative came on his two- wheeler, Gurunatha boarded it and asked the relative to drive towards Rajajinagar. He guided the relative till a small by lane in Rajajinagar and then asked him to stop and got down. He took one name and said, “His house must be somewhere here can you please enquire?”

The relative was still enquiring with others when a couple came out of a house right next to where Gurunatha was standing. They took Gurunatha and his relative inside offered them seats and with folded hands said...”Gurunatha finally you gave your darshana to us. We have been Sakharaya Patna many times but could not see you. Today you have come all the way to our house, how you got the address” he asked.

Then Gurunatha looked at his wife and said, “You owe to keep fasting till Gurunatha comes to your house isn’t it? You should not do like that”. The lady nodded.

Gurunatha said that he wished to eat halubai (a sweet dish made of jaggery and ragi). The lady had just prepared it in their kitchen. The lady brought it and offered it to Gurunatha with a smile.

Later the couple called one of their daughters from inside and asked her to bow to instructed. The other daughter came out, her mother pointing to the girl said, “She is very dumb, and she does not understand anything”

Gurunatha stopped her at that and said,” You should not be doing that, in fact she is very bright, she will get married first and lead a happy married life”. He gave a piece of halubai to her.

With those words he told the relative they should be starting from there as it was already 9.30pm. “I will have a lot of work” he said. The relative ran back to his two-wheeler.

Chapter 141 :  Why the disparity?

Sadguru is beyond the pure and impure; one’s conduct is his religion for him.

A Muslim used to come to Gurunatha’s house. As he was from a place close to my native, he was very friendly with me. During one of his visits to Gurunatha’s house when l was present there at that time, I asked him about what did he discuss with Gurunatha.

In his reply he said, “Sir, though we are native of Andhra Pradesh, it has been many years since we have been doing business and settled here. We came to know about Gurunatha through one of our relatives in Chickmaglur. Then we heard Gurunatha is coming to our town, we then met him at a small temple in our town. From then on we have been visiting this place regularly”.

Then I asked him... “If you don’t mind can I ask you a question”? He nodded, and allowed me to go ahead.

You belong to a different religion, yet you have come here, and will it not cause any trouble for you from your friends in your community?

He said,”See faith and devotion are one’s personal matters. In neighboring Andhra also there is tomb of a famous Hindu seer, our forefathers used to pray there. We continue that tradition. Whomever you worship it finally reaches the universal God then why the need to differentiate between ourselves?

Though I was surprised at his answer, I managed not to show it.

Then he started narrating his story. “When we met Gurunatha for the first time itself it was very clear to us he would not accept anything from anyone. We had this wish that we should make a bed and give it to Gurunatha and he should sleep on it once. We were also aware that most probably he would refuse to accept it.

One day just before I slept I prayed to Gurunatha, “Sir, if you are going to accept a bed from us just give me an indication in my dreams”. Next morning, just before I woke up I had a dream of carrying a bed to Gurunatha’s house and one of his devotees accepting it on his behalf. That day I got up early, finished my ablution and started making a bed for Gurunatha, finished it by evening and carried it myself. We hesitantly entered Gurunatha’s house as many devotees including you were present there and everyone was preparing for some event/function. Gurunatha saw us from inside and told us “I will accept what you have brought me, please keep it there and come inside”. Then you took the bed inside and performed aarti and kept it beside other materials that were probably meant to be sent to some math. A slight strain of disappointment went through my mind that Gurunatha will not be using it and he will be sending somewhere. In a split second, Gurunatha caught my thoughts and consoled me saying “Once you have given it to me, wherever it goes it belongs to me.”

In another instance, the person who had accompanied me to Gurunatha’s house earlier while giving the bed had been a victim of black magic. His legs had blisters and were severly infected. When no medicine seemed to work, as a last resort we wanted to visit Gurunatha’s house. But, unfortunately we were not let in and sent back from that house. On the way, we silently prayed Gurunatha and came back.

That night, the victim had a dream in which Gurunatha had cleaned his wound and assured him he would recover within days. Surprisingly, the wounds which had not responded to any medicine earlier healed within
days.

During another visit, that person was told by Gurunatha that he will buy a house worth about 4 lakhs with some financial help. Actually his financial state was so bad at that time that he did not take Gurunatha’s those words seriously. But, in due course he got a bank loan and even purchased a house which was worth about 4 lakhs. The same person desperately wanted a boy; his family only had girls. Gurunatha had told the couple this time a boy would be born and it came true. However the boy’s health was deteriorating by the day and chances of his survival seemed less. Again Gurunatha was consulted who asked him to ensure no photos of the baby boy are taken under any circumstances and he will survive.

But, someone had taken a photo of the boy and boy’s illness worsened and it seemed he would not survive. Instead of assuring the couple about the boy’s survival this time Gurunatha told them,

“You will get another boy”.

The sick child was admitted to a hospital and did not survive but the couple got a chance to adopt a healthy orphan boy. The couple lapped up the opportunity as Gurunatha’s grace. In due course, the couple has almost forgotten about their loss and is happily seeing this kid grow up with them.

The person who explained this incident said “Probably that was Gurunatha’s wish too” and raised his hands towards the sky.
