Chapter 119 :  A daughters anxiety

When I was listening to the Principal with great interest, his wife walked in and started recounting a few more experiences.

“See though we used to visit Sakharaya Patna only once in a while, we have had this experience that Gurunatha’s compassion has always been on us. We had heard about you (Charanadasa) but today we have got an opportunity to meet you. It is great to hear that you have been selected to write about our Gurunatha”. With these words she started narrating an experience.

We are native of a town called Sagara. After our father passed away we wanted to take our mother along with us. But, she refused to come with us. She did not go with our brothers either. She wanted to stay alone in her old age and the fear that something bad might happen to her when she was alone was constantly bothering us.

On one of my visits to Sakharaya Patna, I put forth my concern and anxiety about my mother to Gurunatha. Gurunatha who was silent for a while suddenly said like this.

“See your mother will come to South Canara shortly to attend a relative’s marriage. When she is there you make her drink grape juice that would suffice. She will come with you, and she will not want to live alone henceforth.”

The surprising thing was, we had never mentioned about our relative’s marriage to Gurunatha. We had another concern; our mother had never drunk grape juice in her life. We had a doubt if she will drink it now. Due to our closeness to Gurunatha we asked him that question also. Gurunatha assured us that she will drink grape juice this time and sent us back.

The date of marriage arrived; my mother also came to attend the marriage, we also went there. After exchanging pleasantries as it was summer we made an excuse of going to a juice shop. I asked my mother to have grape juice. lnitially she refused, but later to our surprise somehow agreed and had it. After finishing the program, my mother went back to Sagara.

Just when we were thinking..Why she did not come with us, she said she does not like to live alone anymore. She came back to South Canara and stayed with us for some time. She then went to our brother’s house as well.

Thanks to Gurunatha’s grace our concern about my mother being alone in her old age was put to rest once and for all.
