Sri Sadguru Mahime

Author: Charana Dasa

Chapter 125 :  An Ocean of compassion

Sadguru is not just responsive to his own devotees; he responds to the difficulties of all creatures in the world. That is the characteristic of a Sadguru. A Guru is not bound by time or place, he is omnipresent.

Once Gurunatha was traveling towards Mysore in a devotee’s car, on the way he saw the lake near Halebeedu and asked the devotee to stop the car. Getting down from the car and having a look at the dry lake he felt pity about the birds and other creatures around who were dependent on the lake water. He offered puja in the dry lake and went ahead.

Surprisingly within 2-3 days when Gurunatha was returning from Mysore, the lake was filled with water. Then the only answer to the question.. who filled the water in the dry lake can only be .. ‘an unfailing faith called Guru’.

Similarly around 1980 lake near Bharama Sagara in Central Karnataka had gone dry. People around the town after hearing about the miracles performed by Gurunatha came to his residence and requested him to help them deal with the prevailing draught-like situation. Gurunatha visited the lake, When he was there.. he took some sand in a fishing net and chanting “Sri Rama Jaya Rama” kept it in the nearby Hanuman temple.

A few days later there were incessant rains and the lake got filled. Not just that, the lake which got filled that day has not become dry till date. The devotees from that town feel it is a sign of Guru’s compassion. This was told to this Charanadasa by one of them.

From what I have seen, it was rare for Gurunatha to attend any functions; he either used to visit the place of the function on the previous day or a day after the function. There have not been any instances of him giving a lecture or a discourse. But, he used to make one notable exception; he used to attend the Ganapathi celebrations at the local school. Every year he used to distribute some sweets to the kids, give them some small advice at their level and come back. While present in the school with the kids, he used to be one among them, his childlike innocence and enthusiasm were unparalleled.

Gurunatha never called himself a Guru or by any such name, sometimes he would call himself a ‘beggar’ or a ‘lunatic’.

Once Gurunatha had to travel by train, while he was sitting in the train, a person who did not have both legs came to him and addressing him had asked “ O God, why have you put me in this state?”, Gurunatha gave him some fruits and blessed him.
