Chapter 123 : Our
beloved Chalapathaih
Gurunatha never expected anything
from anyone. The only thing he probably expected from each one of us was good
conduct and pure state of mind.
Recently I had an opportunity to
meet a former legislator and his wife. They had seen me at Gurunatha’s residence.
So, they were able to recognize me and talk to me. During the course of our
conversation I asked them to share a few of their experiences.
They said, “See we do not know the
meaning of the words Avadhuta, Guru but we can surely say he is the soul of all
creatures of the world “that is our belief. We used to call him “Chalapathaih”
Once I, my husband and a few of our
family friends went to Gurunatha’s house. After we offered the dhoti which we
had brought for him, Gurunatha turned towards a friend in our group and said,
“His name is written on this” with these words he handed over the dhoti to him.
Though we were disappointed that Gurunatha did not use it, we were happy
looking at his detached view about material things and our faith in him
increased even further. When we wanted to bow to him to offer our respects, he
showed us his mother saying “Please do not bow to me, offer your respects to
her, she is 83 now”. His dutifulness which did not expect any social
recognition, others bowing to him etc was a model for us.
In another instance Gurunatha had
come to visit the Shiva temple in Chickmagalur and was returning from there in
a devotee’s car. My husband was in the district stadium but had not seen
Gurunatha. But, Gurunatha who had travelled about 2 kms returned seeing my
husband, spoke to him gave him fruits and left.
Today that Sadguru has given us
everything. More importantly he has given us everything without us asking for
any of it. We wish to look at Gurunatha as an ‘experience of life’, as
simplicity personified, as someone who kindles our inner awareness rather than
someone who has pulled off many miracles”.
With these heartfelt words they
finished recounting their experiences.
