Chapter 46: Service
Once this Charanadasa was occupied
in his daily chores at Gurunatha’s house as usual, Gurunatha never told anyone
what jobs they should be doing. However, those who were doing work diligently
used to get additional knowledge and responsibilities from him. Thanks to
Guru’s compassion I had this opportunity at Gurunatha’s house.
Like this when l was busy in my
duties, one visitor walked in and after observing my work for sometime said.
.”You are very lucky, your service to Guru is exemplary.” I just smiled and continued
with my work. Gurunatha walked in just then, hearing those words he said, “Your
remark won’t reduce Charanadasa’s burden does it? Neither will it relieve him
of his fatigue. If at all you want to help him, you should drop all your work
and join him, and then your words shall be more meaningful, otherwise it is
mere lip service isn’t it?”
Not stopping at that, he asked.. “Do
you know the meaning of ‘service’? Do plants, trees, Sun, this entire nature
ever claim they are doing service? Will they stop their work after being upset
by some event? Do they ever ask for a leave? Like that, the man should always
be dutiful under any circumstances without expecting anything
in return, and then it shall be
called ‘Service’.
With these words he slowly turned
towards me and smiled. That day, I had got the real meaning of the word ‘Service’
and it helped me in containing my ego. I thanked my master through my thoughts.
