Chapter 32: Gurus like fire
He was known as a virtuous
politician in the state. He was elected as a Member of the Parliament (MP) for
three consecutive terms. He had kept the practice of meeting Gurunatha before
and after every election and to seek his blessings.
Once when the parliamentarian had
come to seek Gurunatha’s advice on some issue he had, he suggested to Gurunatha
“You are getting old; you can hand over the reins of the house to your son”
Gurunatha looked at him and smiled.
Guru was like fire, he did not entertain visitors poking their nose into his
personal affairs or others’ affairs who might have come to visit him. Later
when the parliamentarian started his return journey, he started having severe
dysentery. When the doctor’s diagnosis failed to bring any relief, he sent one
of his trusted men to Gurunatha’s house.
Gurunatha then told the gathering
“Guru is a Guru that’s it, if people coming here forget their intent and start
poking their nose into others’ affairs the results would be unpleasant. Then
Gurunatha sent a banana to the parliamentarian with an assurance that he will
be alright. After his health condition improved the parliamentarian came to
Gurunatha’s house and apologized.
In a similar instance, a former
chief minister of the state had sent his close adviser to Gurunatha’s house. There
was a huge crowd gathered at Gurunatha’s house that day. After waiting for some
time, out of impatience that person asked “Sir, you speak to all these people
who have come in bullock carts and continue to ignore me, may I know the reason?”
A bit upset by the question,
probably by the words used while framing it, Gurunatha replied, “Yes, I talk those
people first, what’s wrong with that?, moreover I am not your Guru, if you have
anything in you give this fruit to the seer of the math you visit regularly and
come back and then we shall talk”, gave him an orange. Through that fruit
Gurunatha was offering his last respects to the elderly seer. The seer accepted
the fruit gratefully and left this world a few days later. That person came
back and apologized to Gurunatha.
Once the head of a famous ashram
came to visit Gurunatha along with few of his disciples, Gurunatha gave a warm
reception to him and offered a mango fruit from his farm, blessing him that he
shall be world famous. Later, Gurunatha asked him to visit the vedike(tomb) in
Banavara and shortly after that he joined him there. Gurunatha did a
Pradakshina namaskara(circumambulation, walking around in a ‘circle’ as a form
of worship in Hindu ritual) to everyone assembled there. After seeing this..the
visiting head of ashram said “today, I have lost the notion of ‘me’ in myself”.
It was an amazing experience to see
Gurunatha who could achieve anything he wanted by mere blink of an eye, use
different ways, give subtle hints to correct people. The ashram head went on to
become world famous as Gurunatha had predicted.
“The man should give up the notions
of “ l,me, myself” (Ahankara, ego and arrogance) before he can get a Guru” were
Gurunatha’s words.
