Chapter 33: Reforming an outlaw

This incident happened during early days of my stay at Gurunatha’s house. A person was sitting in a large group that had gathered for darshana. Gurunatha was resting inside and came out to meet the group. As soon as he settled in his chair, Gurunatha pointed his finger at one person in the group and said, “The girl you murdered is still alive, go wash your hands, your hands are blood stained”. The person ran out on hearing this. Later on we came to know that the person had come after raping and stabbing a girl to death. This was his 23ml act of violence against women. He was doing it from an age of 16 and wanted to mend his ways now and start a new life so had come to Gurunatha seeking help.

Later that night this person came back, confessing to his crimes and said he wanted to reform himself and lead a better life. Gurunatha helped him mend his ways and now he has settled down in Mumbai and once in a year he comes to visit Gurunatha along with a few of friends.

I was staying with a friend Gurunatha who was in the middle of his sadhana. He always used to be immersed in thoughts whether he was walking or lying down. Once a person who had come to seek Gurunatha’s blessing occupied a cot meant for Gurunatha’s friend. Though Guru’s friend did not object to it, as l was with him I looked at that person with intense eyes conveying my disapproval of what he had done. Sensing something was wrong he left the room. That person was studying engineering and had come to seek Gurunatha’s help in getting a transfer to his native town. He was talented and studious. Before leaving he insulted us by making a comment that “Gurunatha’s close followers staying with him are an illiterate lot”. Later in his annual exams he failed in most of the papers. This did dent his ego a bit and changed his view about Gurunatha and his followers. He is still struggling to settle down in life.

In another incident, a resident of Maharashtra had come to Gurunatha’s house. He was in shipping business and was doing well. However he had faced some unexpected losses all of sudden which made him lose all his possessions. Empty handed, he had come to seek Gurunatha’s blessings. Gurunatha gave him an onion and said “Keep it with you; this shall take you out of your difficulties”. Today this person owns many ships and has tided over many of his difficulties. He still keeps the onion in his house in the pujaroom and worships it.

Once a Shivamogga based businessman had opened a hotel in a north Karnataka town. He had earned a lot of fame and money in a short time. However, he faced some difficult times all of a sudden and lost everything he had and accumulated a lot of debt. The lenders started intimidating him; he even started getting death threats. Scared for life, he shut shop, came back to Shivamogga and was almost living in exile. He had heard about Gurunatha through someone and came to seek Gurunatha’s help. Gurunatha gave him a measuring jar used to measure milk and said, “ hang it upside down next to your hotel all your problems will get solved, those who threatened you, will come and help you on their own”

As Gurunatha had said, the person has reopened his hotel and the persons who had threatened him earlier came and told him “Sir, you need not worry, we shall lend you more money if required, but do not close the hotel under any circumstances”. Today that person is almost debt free and leading a relaxed life. The remedies Gurunatha gave had no apparent relation to the problems. But, the problems used get solved quickly. Only Guru can explain their inner meaning/relation.

Guru likes devotion, passion, purity of thoughts, action and not extravagance, hypocrisy and show off. Simplicity is of foremost importance and these qualities stand above caste, creed and other divides created by man.
