Chapter 72 : Protection for a seer
Gurunatha had kept a practice of
sending Bhiksha (an assortment of food items) to seers in various maths. Once
the jagadguru of the advaitha peetha had chosen a person from Chickmaglur to
head a math near Mysore, after ascending the throne he came to know that some
vested interests in that math were threatening the senior seer there to keep the
administration in their hands. A little disappointed by the behavior of those
people he once told them “A Sanyasi should always be concentrating on spiritual
enlightenment and not on petty politics, please keep away from the matters of the math”. The
people in administration got further upset by this and cut off food and water to
the junior seer. Saddened by the developments and the hostile environment at
the math the junior seer came to Gurunatha and explained his predicament.
Gurunatha then said, “Even though
you are Sanyasi, you should take care of your mother, because we could not have
come to this world without her. You should come out of the math and take care
of your mother for two years. Then the math’s responsibility shall come to you.
Later on Gurunatha visited their house also to reassure them. As he had said,
after about 2 years the seer is sitting on the throne of the math.
In another instance, the seer of the
advaitha peetha was going on a visit to a neighboring state. Being very close
to him, Gurunatha requested, him not to leave the math for some time. But, the
seer did not heed the request. Gurunatha called one of his devotees staying
nearby and told him that the seer’s life was in danger and he wanted the
devotee’s help, the devotee readily agreed.
As per Gurunatha’s instructions the
devotee started throwing some rice flakes till the math’s entrance. The moment
he came out of math’s gate he lost sense of his own whereabouts and what he was
doing. He rode his bike for 3-4 kms in some direction before being stopped by a
stranger. The stranger told him about his Guru’s instructions and offered him a
tender coconut. Once the devotee drank the tender coconut he regained his senses
and started back towards his town. By the time he approached the bridge a
cowherd came and begged for something to eat. The devotee had kept some fruits
as per Gurunatha’s instructions and gave it to him. The cowherd spilled it
around and asked for help. Already warned by Gurunatha about this the devotee
did not help him. A little later the devotee saw the cowherd ran away shouting
something. The devotee came and met Gurunatha in Chickmaglur and narrated the
whole incident. Gurunatha’s body which became ill and bed ridden that day
survived only for about three months.
A Guru shall even give away his own
life to safeguard his devotees. This is the hallmark of a real Sadguru.
