Chapter 79 : Grace can make barren land fertile
Once Gurunatha sent me on a visit to
a village in Tamilnadu, along with few of his devotees staying in Bangalore, we
were to visit the tomb of a saint and offer our respects.
The saint had taken a Sajeeva
Samadhi (on his instructions, his devotees probably had constructed a tomb around
him when he was still alive.) and his devotees had planted a neem tree on his
tomb according to his last wish it has grown as a big tree today. During our
visit we found that the tree had started withering and growing dry. When we
finished our rituals as per Gurunatha’s instructions, the priest who was taking
care of that place showed us the tree and requested we make the tree bloom
again by Gurunatha’s grace.
Getting to know this Gurunatha
instructed one of the devotees to keep certain things at the bottom of the tree
in certain directions and said the tree will bloom back. Few months later when
one of the devotees visited the place again, the priest there happily showed
them the tree that had bloomed.
The seer of a famous advaitha math
kept a practice of coming to Gurunatha’s residence once a year. On one such
visit the care takers of the peetham visited Gurunatha’s house in advance to
make sure the necessary arrangements were in place. During this one of the care
takers objected to a few of the arrangements, requested a large portion of
bilva leaf(an auspicious leaf offered to Shiva) to be kept ready. Gurunatha did
not like extravagance or showoff, a little upset with the demands made, asked
the care taker “With Eshwara’s grace I can rejoin the cut bilva leaves back to
the tree, whether you will be able to do it? This house does not belong to me, it
belongs to the Guru, if he wishes to come here, he may come”. The care taker
who was taken aback by those harsh words of Gurunatha left the place without a
single word. Later on the seer visited Gurunatha’s place.
A person belonging to a leading
audio company from the film industry fell sick; he was admitted to a prestigious
hospital and was seen by the famous doctors in the city. However he showed
little improvement. When Gurunatha was told about this.. he asked “He is
admitted in such and such a hospital and is staying in such a room number is it
not?(including the direction he was made to sleep in).” “There is a fan in that
room which has a loose bolt, if you tighten the bolt his health shall improve”.
When it was done, the person who had not responded to any medicines close to
about a month recovered and started walking on his own.
A Tamilnadu government servant had a
small kid who was very stubborn and ill-tempered. The kid used to tear apart
whatever he got when in that mood, would not listen to anyone including his
parents. Controlling this child had become a problem for the parents. Running
out of options they came to Gurunatha’s house.
It was morning time and l was
getting flowers from a vendor at Gurunatha’s house. This kid walked in and started
tearing apart the flowers and the flowers spilled all over the entrance of the
house. The parents of the kid rushed to stop him. Gurunatha who observed the
whole incident from inside signaled the parents not to intervene and let the
kid do what he wanted to. He also looked at the kid intensely for a few
minutes. After a few minutes the kid stopped his antics and became normal. His
stubbornness ended that day. Later when those parents asked Gurunatha about the
kid’s behavior he said “Each living body in this world has a relationship with another
disembodied thing. It sometimes causes this kind of abnormal behavior. When he
was still in the womb, his mother had seen an incident where a woman jumped
into a well screaming. The fear got entrapped inside the kid and is manifesting
itself like this.
Once a person who was in a high post
in Bangalore came to Gurunatha’s residence, there were about 8-10 of us along
with Gurunatha that day. The person had both devotion and curiosity towards
Gurunatha. Observing Gurunatha’s mood for sometime he said “I am unable to
comprehend a few of things you are saying, if what you say is correct, tell me
how many people are currently in this room at this very moment?”.
Gurunatha replied, “See apart from 8
people whom you can see, there are 25 Christian nuns who are disembodied,
simultaneously I am conversing with them. This is the reason I tell you, do not
come looking for this body, I won’t be here, only the body will be here”.
A little confident now the person
asked more questions..”Since, it is said that Guru is ubiquitous, is that true?
If so, are you present near my house in Bangalore?
Gurunatha replied, there are two
beggars who come near your house. One of them limps and drags his feet a bit,(
explained some more features of the beggar) I get into him many times. Whenever
you see him, give some alms before you send him away. The person who was asking
questions till now was speechless.
