Chapter 40: Gods Work
This devotee was very close to
Gurunatha. Also, a Guru’s words should be exe'| cuted without any omissions and
lapse was what I learnt from him. His devotion towards Guru resembled ‘Bheema’s
devotion’ (Bheema is a mythological character in Mahabharata, famous for his
physique,build,strength and tenacity).
Recently, he had called me up and
invited me to his house, when I met him, recounting his devotion towards
Gurunatha, I asked him to share a few of his experiences.
He started recounting an experience
by saying.. “Guru’s words are our lives.” Once Gurunatha had given us the
responsibility of restoration of an old advaitha peetham, we needed about 300
bags of cements for molding work. Though I had arranged the necessary money and
paid an advance to the vendor, at the last moment he called up to inform
because of an ongoing lorry strike there will be a delay in sending over the
cement bags. We had done all the arrangements for the work and about 80
laborers were waiting for the work. We were in a fix.
During this time Gurunatha had
strictly told us that we should not accept any help from any of the other devotees
without consulting him. We did not have enough money to order cement again from
a different vendor. Unable to decide what to do, we prayed to Gurunatha and
contacted a few business friends. From one of the acquaintances we were able to
arrange for the cement required. The molding work went without any interruption.
Once we finished the work, the cement we had earlier ordered also arrived.
After seeing the events unfold, Gurunatha’s words came to my mind. He used tell
us, “Offer everything you have to Guru and wait, Guru will get your work done”.
When we were tasked with the
restoration work, I and my friend had estimated about 12-13 lakh rupees. When
we reached Gurunatha’s house he said, “See you will probably need about 12-13
lakh rupees for this work, I have about 8 lakhs with me the remaining amount
will have to be somehow arranged” with these words he looked at me and smiled.
Though I did not understand what he meant at that time, later it occurred to me
what he was hinting at. I had bought some land near Bangalore along with my
brother, when we sold that me and my brother had got a profit of about 8 lakhs
each. I felt privileged to have been given such an opportunity from Gurunatha.
When we managed to finish the work,
Gurunatha told us, “I wanted to buy a ring and offer our gratitude for the work
you have done. But, it will be like putting a price for what you have done, so
decided against it, the senior seer is very happy by the work you have done and
your forefathers would get their respect due to them. What else can a Guru
expect from his disciple?” with these words he affectionately looked towards
me. I was overcome by emotions and bowed to him.
We are unable to offer him anything
as everything that we have belongs to him only. I silently prayed.. let me live
in a way that, I will not hurt your feelings under any circumstances.
This Charanadasa left the place with
vivid memories of devotion and togetherness of that big joint family.
