Chapter 34 : Gurus advice on a political career
He had handled many portfolios in
the state government as a minister and was the leader of a national party.
Recently he has become a parliamentarian also. In an earlier election, he had
pledged all his property but lost the elections. Completely dejected he had
decided to end his life. He wanted to have Gurunatha’ s darshana before that
and had come to his residence.
Knowing his mental state, Gurunatha
had given him food and shelter for weeks and made sure he does not go out for a
few days. Gurunatha had sent him back only after making sure the person has
gained enough self confidence not only to continue to live but to fight more
elections. Today the same person has become a parliamentarian.
It was usual to see the politicians
come to seek Gurunatha’s blessings before the elections. A candidate from a
national party had lost two elections in a row. As a last attempt he asked for
Gurunatha’s blessings. After giving him sweets and a pen, Gurunatha assured him
he will win the elections and go on to become a chief minister
in future.
As Guru’s words are bound to come
true, he got elected and became a minister. Recently he has been elected twice
consecutively. After a being minister when he came to visit Gurunatha he got
this message.“ Don’t let the power get the better of you, get the better of the
power to serve the needy people, be vigilant, if you want to make money do it,
but don’t be greedy”.
Gurunatha asked him to follow three
simple rules.
·
Don’t
forget (people who elected you)
·
Don’t
hurt (anyone)
·
Don’t
show off (power)
Though still in power today his
devotion towards Guru has not changed.
Meanwhile, the other politician who
got elected three times had become too money minded. He did not get to meet
Gurunatha often. On one of the occasions when he was able to meet, Gurunatha
had warned him about getting greedy and that he should mend his ways.
Similarly, Gurunatha had told a
legislator from north Karnataka that he would become a minister. He became a
minister as Gurunatha had told him. Whenever he came for darshana he used to
make coffee for everyone and wash the cups. After serving as an education
minister this person is still known as a virtuous politician.
Once a famous sanyasi was to visit a
minister’s house, Gurunatha had gone there to get his darshana and talk to him.
Gurunatha was distributing fruits and other food items to those who had
gathered which was his regular practice. The lady who had become a minister
then, came and shouted “You should not distribute any eatables here”.
Gurunatha asked her why her conduct
was different before the elections when she had come to seek his blessings and
why she was behaving differently once she became a minister.
She did not get elected from then on
and till date and she is struggling hard to get a foot hold in the power corridors.
