Chapter 84 : Easiest form of worship
There could not have been an
instance when Gurunatha was in town and a soul on that road walked on an empty
stomach. Even livestock had some fodder and water kept for them by the roadside. Fruits and
sweets were distributed to people walking by. During hot summer cold buttermilk
was being served. When Gurunatha was in town, at least 15-20 litres of milk
used to get distributed at his house.
Once an onlooker asked Gurunatha
“What puja do you perform?” thinking that the food distribution was part of
some ritual for a specific deity. Gurunatha replied with a smile. What puja do
I need? What I am doing now is my Puja, it is the homa (a ritual of offering to
Lord Agni). He had also said, “One would not go without receiving a boon by
doing the simplest puja possible (handing out food to hungry is the surest way
of getting boons).
Though the visitors came with a wide
variety of problems seeking remedy from Gurunatha once they met him all of them
went back with one feeling, that of an elusive peace and happiness.
Once during the Guava season a
school boy on his way to school saw guava fruits in the tree inside Gurunatha’s
compound and wished if only he could have had them. To his utter surprise next
day guava fruits were distributed at his school which had close to 350
students.
That boy was distant relative of
Gurunatha, Gurunatha was very affectionate towards him. The child was also
participating in a weekly devotional program. The program consisted of reciting
bhajanas for Lord Rama and going house to house in that town. The bhajana group
also used to visit Gurunatha’s house. Once owing to financial difficulty
Gurunatha had borrowed a few thousand rupees from boy’s father and
unfortunately could not repay it in time. Though that person himself was in
urgent need of money out of respect for Gurunatha he never reminded Gurunatha
about the loan.
The boy’s father had taken a loan
from his own brother who was now forcing him to repay the loan. Boy’s mother
unable to bear the constant pressure started pestering her husband to remind
Gurunatha about the loan repayment. Boy’s father however was not moved. One day
when bhajana group was in front of Gurunatha’s house he called the boy‘s father
and told him “Your wife is pestering you at home to get money from me isn’t it?
I am sorry, I will arrange for the same as soon as possible”. The boy who was
aware of his mother’s demands at home was surprised how come Gurunatha knows
what was happening inside their house.
One day the brother walked in to
their house and demanded the money to be settled immediately and the spat
seemed to turn worse. Just then Gurunatha showed up and gave that person ten
thousand rupees and walked out of their house.
The villagers had joined hands to
build a small prayer hall for their weekly Sri Rama bhajans. The boy along with
a few of his friends was also contributing. One day all the children who had
gathered felt like having masala dosas(a dish made from rice batter). The
manager there did not heed to their demand, though disappointed they continued
working till evening. Next day at about the same time to everyone’s delight
Gurunatha and his devotees walked in with masala dosas distributed them to
everyone who was working there and walked away. In another instance, Gurunatha
had called on the same boy and blessed him saying “Wherever you go, you shall
not have problem for food or water.” Today the same boy is working as a teacher
in a government school.
