Chapter 35 : Guru as an Investigating Officer
This incident had happened before
this Charanadasa reached Guru’s house. But, Gurunatha himself had told me about the
incident once. In a nearby town there I had been frequent thefts. The entire
district police force could not nab the thief even though they made a herculean
effort.
During this the police
superintendent had heard about Gurunatha through someone. He came directly to Gurunatha’s
residence explained him the problem and sought a remedy. Gurunatha smiled and
told him “thefts are being done not by professional thieves but a launderer.
His laundry shop is at such a place, the stolen items are also kept in the same
shop”. Police were able to nab the culprit and also recover the stolen
valuables. Relieved police officials came to Gurunatha’s house along with the
recovered valuables, showed them to Gurunatha and thanked him profusely.
In another incident, a walkie-talkie
used in the police force had gone missing. Unable to trace it for a long time
they contacted Gurunatha. After getting a request from the higher officials
Gurunatha went to their office and told them the place where they should search
and told them after how many days they will find it. The walkie-talkie was
found as he had said.
Unlike the ordinary people a Guru’s
punishment is all about correcting someone’s mistake and getting him on the
right track, you can see his affection and kindness even in that.
Gurunatha used to buy many items
like clothes, provisions, fruits from some shops in Sakharaya Patna. It was my
duty as a charanadasa to keep a tab on what was being bought from where and
periodically settle the bills. He did not like to bargain from these vendors
and used to tell “We should never bargain for items meant for charity”. I used
to follow the same practice while buying things from these vendors, though some
of my friends at Gurunatha’s house objected to this.
Once a vendor trying to misuse this
practice of Gurunatha overcharged the items to the extent of about Rs 5000/-. As
a regular customer I did not suspect anything and paid him and came back.
Gurunatha first told me cryptically “Fifteen will go for taking five” and then
made me aware of the deceit/fraud.
Within a matter of days, that vendor
started having chest pain. First a local doctor was consulted, later a district
specialist. When his health did not improve he was referred to go to Bangalore
for further check-ups. There a series of heart related tests were done. He had
to shut shop for 5 days lost business on those days, spent about 15000/- for
various tests only to hear there was no heart related problem.
Later when I visited his shop again,
he started recounting the problems he faced, I told him about the deceit and
what Gurunatha had told me about him losing the money and requested him not to
make the same mistake again. He repented his mistake and promised he would
never to repeat it.
“Guru considers the whole world as
his family; he is an ocean of compassion. However, in material terms he is an
astute accountant, he would not take a penny nor give one away by mistake”
