Chapter 55 : An
encyclopedia called Guru
“We should be outside our home 8
times the amount of time we spend inside” that is our destiny. We have to do
it; otherwise we will not be able to help the distressed people who come seeking
remedies to their problems.” were his words.
Gurunatha used to spend all his time
in giving remedies to people who flocked him with their various worldly
problems. He set an example for those people by taking all his own joys and
sorrows with an equal and a similar state of mind. “Think before you write each
letter/word” he used to say. He would never let us strike-off or correct what
we had written. He would never let us throw away a written book also.
“Once you write and turn over a
page, you should never have to look back, that is how you should live” he used
to tell us. We should think twice before each and every step we take in life
and life’s journey should not have blots and correction marks was the message.
His own life was a set example for that.
Whenever any visitor/devotee told
about his neighborhood/town in his introductions Gurunatha would be quick
replying to him with an acquaintance in the same neighborhood no matter how far
the devotee came from. Below is an anecdote that surprised me as well.
Once a devotee from Bangalore called
me up and said.. He wanted to go on a pilgrimage to Badari, Kedar, Hrishikesh
and few other places. He wanted me to convey this message to Gurunatha. When I
did the same, Gurunatha told me about 6-8 devotees of him who were staying in
those places along with their names and physical features that would help
recognize them and told that the devotee should visit them and seek their blessings.
While I did convey the reply back to the devotee set for the pilgrimage, l was
very surprised. I asked Gurunatha, “How is it that you know all those places
and people? From what I know, you have never visited any of those places”.
In his reply he only said “What do
you think of your Guru? I saw a smile and a twinkle in his eyes.
Like this, though it seemed that he
led an ordinary, small town life like us, among us, he was an invaluable gem
and was a walking/talking encyclopedia of the world, this has been my belief
and experience as well.
Gurunatha would never find fault
with what other people did. Sometimes he would just say “It would have been
better had it been done that way. Same applied to food prepared as well.. no
matter how it tasted, he would eat it and would say.. “It relieved so many
people of their hunger”. We should respect the effort and time put in by each
individual was the message.
Take and accept whatever Eashwara
gives you, never complain and when the time is right he shall give you everything
were his words.
Though such a big power, he came to
earth as a human being to live among us. When looked at it from this
perspective, the physical bodily ailments that he suffered were on one side
(most of them would be taken by him to relieve his devotees’ sufferings), where
as how much grief and disappointment he would have suffered by some of the
conducts of his devotees like us is what bothers me now.
