Chapter 68 : An experience of a lifetime
Two friends used to visit
Gurunatha’s house seeking solutions from Gurunatha for their problems. Both
were businessmen by profession. One was staying in Mangalore for some time. Now
both of them are settled in Mysore.
They used to wait patiently in one
corner of Gurunatha’s house for Gurunatha’s glance. When Gurunatha called them,
they would politely explain their problem and seek solution, their patience,
humility, devotion was model for the other visitors.
In 2009 during one of their visits,
Gurunatha called them and said, in about ten days from now you should visit the
Mangalambika temple in Mangalore, the church in Bejai. On the way near a
village called Kuntadi in Belathangadli taluk around 3.15 pm you will see a
hermit. You should not be afraid of his terrifying looks and should seek his
blessings. You will meet him 3 times on that same day. Hearing this one of them
was very curious and asked “Sir, how shall we identify him?”
“You shall see two police jeeps and
a tractor near him when you meet him for the first time” was the reply from
Gurunatha. Both of them set out to have an experience of their life time,
visited the Mangalambika temple, the church at Bejai. But, after that they were
confused in which direction they should continue their journey and were slowly
driving towards a circle. A speeding car came towards them almost hitting them
head on, while trying to avoid the collision the driver veered to extreme left
and continued on the same road. Within a short distance they found two police
vehicles and a bearded man of about 6 feet tall. Though the duo was still
unsure they stepped out of their car and offered their respects to that man and
started from there. After traveling a short distance they felt they should have
offered something to the hermit as a mark of their respect. In particular one of
them felt he should have got some mangoes that he saw in Manipal on their way
before they met the hermit. They had already traveled some distance and all
they could get nearby was some bananas. They got some bananas and water and
returned to the spot where they had met the hermit first, wanting to offer him
what they had brought. To their utter surprise, the hermit who was empty handed
last time now had a mango in his hand which resembled exactly what they had
seen in Manipal. Recounting Gurunatha’s words about not getting affected by his
looks both of them prayed that his compassion and grace shall be with them
always and moved on from there. Little distance away they found an ashram(hermitage)
and went inside. lnside they saw the tomb of a hermit and offered their
respects to it. Looking around they found the photos of the hermit and were
struck dumb for a moment. Photos belonged to the same hermit they had met a few
minutes back.
One of them had been very skeptical
about the whole event earlier and had offered his respects without much
conviction. He was totally convinced now but repented that the time had already
passed. He wished if only he could meet the hermit again. Within a short
distance they met the same hermit again for one last time. Offering their
respects again and thanking Gurunatha for giving them an experience of their
life time they left that place.
