Chapter 53 : Ugadi
It was ‘Ugadi’ that day, the
beginning of the traditional Hindu New Year. I started from Bangalore as soon
as I got the news of Gurunatha’s mother’s demise, reached Sakharaya Pattana
around evening. Gurunatha’s mother’s body had been brought to his farm from his
house for last rites. They were short of people to prepare the place for last
rites and I joined in. The next day Gurunatha had given me a brass utensil
which I still have with me.
On the previous day of
Ugadi,Gurunatha had spoken to his ailing mother and said “everything is over, have
a peaceful journey and we shall meet some time”. Grandmother, who slept that
night, did not wake up. Worried that if this news were to go out, the villagers
would stop the festivities Gurunatha covered her body with a thick blanket. It
looked as if the grandmother was still sleeping, even the lady who slept next
to the grandmother the previous night did not know about her death.
Probably to make sure there is no
room for suspicion he had made arrangements for rangoli to be drawn on the main
streets. He sent one of his devotees to check if the festivities were on inside
the town. Only after making sure, people in town were celebrating the New Year
as they should he let the news of the death go out.
Similarly in another incident, he
had told “tomorrow everyone should have their meal by 11.30am, after that you
will not be able to eat”. Like he had said, the next day he made sure all
visiting devotees were served food before 11.30 am. Gurunatha’s son had left
for Bangalore in his relative’s car. On the way the car had hit a state
transport bus. Gurunatha had told the owner of the car for about 6 months not
bring the car. Even then he had brought the car. Being well aware that it might
put his son’s life in danger he stuck to the principle that nobody can go
against wishes of Eashwara and the rule applied to him as well.
Even after hearing about the news of
the accident, there was no attachment that his son has been hurt only his
duties were being carried out.” Happiness, sadness, good, evil all these are
states of our mind. We should attain mental equanimity and keep moving forward.
Then Eashwara shall be with us” used to be his words and he had walked his talk
on this occasion.
