Chapter 11 : A Secret called Guru
Once Gurunatha had sent me to
Banavara to visit the vedike(tomb) there along with a few other devotees in a
car. I had been to that place many times before. Many a time stayed there
overnight, got up early morning, did some pradakshina namaskarams and returned
later in the day to Sakharaya Patna by hitching a ride. During this time, I could
sense an invisible force from inside the vedike. I had many experiences due to
this invisible force around the vedike.
During this visit along with other
devotees I commented about my experiences in the past. The devotees were
curious and pressed me for more details. l was hesitant. The devotees convinced
me, saying “Though you should not share your experiences with strangers it was
fine to share them with the disciples of the same Guru”. Convinced by this
logic and not understanding the full concept of Guru, I shared my experiences
with them and came back.
As soon as I returned, Gurunatha
asked me..”Your bank account number, balance in that, will you ever share with
anyone?” I did not understand the question, so I kept quiet. The next 2-3 days
the same question was repeated to me. Then it descended on me what I had done
about my experiences at Banavara vedike.
The following day, l bowed to his
feet before starting towards Bangalore. He kept his hand on my head and said,”
Guru is a treasure, but you should not give out the keys to anyone else”. It
took me a lot of time to regain those experiences I was so used to at Banavara
vedike.
This incident always reminds of
Gurunatha’s words.. “Guru is to be kept a secret; he is for your sadhana and
not an exhibit.”
A Guru will test the disciples who
come to him, in many ways, for those who pass the tests he will impart the
knowledge about the mantra and other tools required for sadhana as appropriate
for him. He will explain the difficulties the disciple may face on the path of
his sadhana, ways around them and encourage him to move along that path. The
disciple must however keep his mantra and the guidance given to him as a secret
till he attains Samadhi (this is called ‘Guru Goupya’).
