ಡಮರುಗಧಾರಿ ಶಿವನೋ ಶ್ರೀ ಗುರುವೋ ?

॥ ಓಂ ನಮೋ ಭಗವತೇ ಸದ್ಗುರು ಶ್ರೀ ಹನುಮನಾಥ ಅವಧೂತ ಆದಿಶೇಷಾಯ ನಮಃ ॥

॥ ಶ್ರೀ ಮಹಾಗಣಪತಿ, ಸರಸ್ವತಿ, ಸದ್ಗುರುಭ್ಯೋ ನಮಃ ॥

ಪ್ರಿಯ ನಿತ್ಯ ಸತ್ಸಂಗದ ಬಂಧುಗಳೇ ... ನಿತ್ಯ ಸತ್ಸಂಗದ ಒಂದು ಭಾಗ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ರೂಪವಾಗಿ 'ಸದ್ಗುರುನಾಥ ಲೀಲಾಮೃತ ಭಾಗ - 2, ನಿತ್ಯ ಸತ್ಸಂಗ" ವೆಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಹೊರಬಂದಿದೆ. ಗುರುನಾಥರು ವಿರಾಟ್ ರೂಪವನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸಿದ ಘಟನೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಸಂಪನ್ನವಾದಾಗ, ಸರಕು ಮುಗಿಯಿತು, ನನಗವರು ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದು ಇಷ್ಟೇ ಏನೋ ಅಂತ ಚಿಂತಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ - 'ತೊಗಳಯ್ಯಾ  ಅದೆಷ್ಟು ಬರೀತಿಯೋ ನಾನೂ ನೋಡ್ತೀನಿ' , ಎನ್ನುವಂತೆ ಗುರುನಾಥರು ಡಮರುಗಧಾರಿ ಶಿವಸ್ವರೂಪಿಯಾಗಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಭಕ್ತರೊಬ್ಬರಿಗೆ ದರ್ಶನ ನೀಡಿದ ಸ್ವಾರಸ್ಯಕರ ಘಟನೆಯಿಂದ ಅವರ ಎರಡನೆಯ ಪುಸ್ತಕಕ್ಕೆ ನಿಂತು ಬಿಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ನಿತ್ಯ ಸತ್ಸಂಗಕ್ಕೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಚಾಲನೆ ನೀಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ತಮ್ಮ ಅಂತರಂಗದ ಅನುಭವವನ್ನು ನಿತ್ಯ ಸತ್ಸಂಗಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ನಾನು ಬೇಡಿದಾಗ, ನಿಮಗಾಗಿ - ಆ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಭಕ್ತರು ಧಾರೆ ಎರೆದ ಆ ವಿಚಾರ ಅವರ ಮಾತುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇಳಿದರೆ ಸ್ವಾರಸ್ಯವಲ್ಲವೇ ? ಬನ್ನಿ ತಯಾರಾಗಿ, ಅಲಭ್ಯವೂ, ದುರ್ಲಭವೂ, ಜನುಮ ಜನುಮಗಳ ಸತತ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನದಿಂದ ದೊರಕುವ ಆ ಗುರುಕಾರುಣ್ಯ, ಅನಂತಣ್ಣ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಲಭಿಸಿದ ರೀತಿಯನ್ನು ಅರಿಯೋಣ. 

"ನಾನು ಗುರುನಾಥರ ವಿಚಾರವನ್ನು ಮೊಟ್ಟ ಮೊದಲು ನನ್ನ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರಾದ ಗೋಪಣ್ಣನವರಿಂದ, ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾಗ ಕೇಳಿದ್ದೆ. ಗುರುನಾಥರ ಹೆಸರೇ, ಅವರ ವಿಚಾರವೇ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಅವರ ದರ್ಶನ ಮಾಡಲೇಬೇಕೆಂಬ ತುಡಿತಕ್ಕೆ ಹಚ್ಚಿತ್ತು. ನನ್ನ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರಿಗೆ ನನ್ನ ಹಂಬಲ ತಿಳಿಸಿದಾಗ, ಆ ಮಿತ್ರರು "ಆಯ್ತು ಪರಮಾತ್ಮನನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿ ನೋಡುತ್ತೇನೆ" ಎಂದು ಭರವಸೆ ನೀಡಿದ್ದರು. ಅದರ ಮಾರನೆಯ ದಿವಸವೇ ಎರಡು ಸಾವಿರದ ಇಸವಿ ಇರಬೇಕು. ಗುರುನಾಥರಿಗೆ ಅದೇನು ಕರುಣೆ ಬಂದಿತ್ತೋ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಕರೆಸಿಕೊಂಡು ದರ್ಶನವಿತ್ತರು - ಹರಸಿದರು. ಬಹುಶಃ ನನಗಿದು ಜನುಮ ಜನುಮಗಳ ಪುಣ್ಯದ ಫಲವಿರಬೇಕು ಎಂದೆನಿಸಿತು. ಮುಂದೆ ಆ ಗುರುಕಾರುಣ್ಯ ನಿರಂತರ ನನಗೊದಗಿ ಬಂದು, ನನ್ನ ಜೀವನದ ಗತಿಯೇ ಬದಲಾಯಿತು. ಮುಂದೆ 2003 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಗುರುನಾಥರ ತಾಯಿಯವರು ಮುಕ್ತರಾದರು. ಮುಕ್ತರಾದಾಗ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಹೋದೆ. ಆಗ ನಾನು ಕಂಡದ್ದೆಂದರೆ, ಅನೇಕ ಭಕ್ತರು ಅದೆಲ್ಲಿಂದಲೋ ನಿತ್ಯ ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟೇ ಬೇಗ ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ನಿರ್ಗಮಿಸಿಬಿಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ನನಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಉಳಿಯುವ ಸುಯೋಗ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತ್ತು. 

ಒಂಬತ್ತು ದಿವಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂರು ನಾಲ್ಕು ದಿವಸ ನಾವು ಮೂರೇ ಜನಗಳು ಇರುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆವು. ಒಂದು ದಿವಸ ಗುರುನಾಥರು ಇದ್ದಕ್ಕಿದ್ದಂತೆ 'ನಡೀರಿ ಸಾರ್ ಒಂದಿಷ್ಟು ದೇವಾಲಯಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಬರೋಣ" ಎಂದರು. ನನಗೆ ಪರಮಾಶ್ಚರ್ಯವಾಯಿತು. ಒಂದು ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಊರಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಗಳಿಗೆಲ್ಲಾ ಹೋಗಿಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ನನಗೆ, ಗುರುನಾಥರು ಸಿಕ್ಕ ಮೇಲೆ "ಏನ್ ಸಾರ್ ಇನ್ಮೇಲೆ ನೀವು ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಬೇಕಾದ ಪ್ರಮೇಯವಿಲ್ಲ" ಎಂದು ಬಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರು. ಅದೇನು ? ಆ ದೇವರುಗಳನ್ನೆಲ್ಲಾ ಸುತ್ತಿ ಬೇಡಿದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ಈ ಪರಮಾತ್ಮ ನನಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕರೋ - ಅಥವಾ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಇಲ್ಲೇ ಇದೆ ಇನ್ನೇಕೆ ನನ್ನ ಶಿಷ್ಯ ಸುತ್ತಾಡಬೇಕೆಂದು ನಾನೇ ಎಲ್ಲ" ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ನನಗೆ ತಿಳಿಸಲು ಆ ರೀತಿ ಹೇಳಿದ್ದರೋ ನನಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. ನಾನೆಂದೂ ಚಿಂತಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ - ಗುರುವಾಕ್ಯ ಪ್ರಮಾಣವೆಂದು, ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೋಗುವ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸವನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಬಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೆ. ಈಗ "ಈಶ್ವರನ ದೇವಾಲಯಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗೋಣ" ಎಂದಾಗ ಒಂದು ಚೂರು ಚಿಂತೆಯಾದರೂ, ಅದು ಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಳಚಿತು. ನನ್ನ ಜೊತೆಗಿದ್ದ ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬ ಭಕ್ತರನ್ನು "ಹಾಲು ಹಾಕಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ರಪ್ಪಾ ಇಲ್ಲೇ ಇದ್ದು" ಎಂದು ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲೇ ಉಳಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಅಂದು ನಡೆದ ದಿವ್ಯ ಘಟನೆಯನ್ನು ಸತ್ಸಂಗಕ್ಕೆ ಧಾರೆ ಎರೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೂ ಇಂದೂ ಸಹಾ ಅವರ ಮೈ ಕಂಪಿಸುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಅಂದಿನ ದಿವ್ಯ ದರ್ಶನ ನೆನೆದು ಮತ್ತೆ ಮುಂದುವರಿಯಿತು ಗುರುನಾಥರ ಸತ್ಕಥೆ. 

"ಗುರುನಾಥರೊಂದಿಗೆ ನಾನು ಶಿವಾಲಯದೆಡೆಗೆ ಹೊರಟೆ. ಎದುರಿನ ಕಟ್ಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಗುರುನಾಥರು ಕುಳಿತಿದ್ದರು.  'ಹೋಗಿ ಸಾರ್ ಶಿವಾಲಯಕ್ಕೆ ಮೂರು ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣೆ ಹಾಕಿ ಬನ್ನಿ' ಎಂದು ನುಡಿದರು. ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಬಾಗಿಲಿಗೆ ಬೀಗ ಹಾಕಿತ್ತು. ಭಗವಂತ ಇರುವುದು ಭಾವನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ. ಬಾಗಿಲಿಗೆ ಬೀಗ ಮುದ್ರೆ ಇದ್ದರೇನು ಅಂತರಂಗದ ಮನದ ಕದ ತೆರೆದಿದ್ದರೆ ಸಾಕಲ್ಲ, ಎಂದು ಭಾವಿಸಿ ಹೊರಗಣ್ಣಿನಿಂದಲೇ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣೆ ಬಂದು ದೀರ್ಘ ದಂಡ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ ಹಾಕುತ್ತಾ ಓರೆಗಣ್ಣಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಗುರುನಾಥರ ಕಡೆ ನೋಡಿದೆ. ಒಂದು ಕ್ಷಣ ತಬ್ಬಿಬ್ಬಾದೆ, ಸ್ಥಂಭೀಭೂತನಾದೆ. ಗುರುನಾಥರ ಜಾಗದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದುದು ಡಮರುಗಧಾರಿ ಶಿವ, ಓರೆಗಣ್ಣಿನಿಂದ ನೋಡುತ್ತ ಮೂರು ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣೆ ಮಾಡುವಾಗಲೂ ಅವರು ಕಾಣಿಸುವವರೆಗೆ ಕಣ್ಣಲ್ಲಿ ಆ ಭವ್ಯರೂಪವನ್ನು ತುಂಬಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾ ಸಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆ. ಮೂರನೆಯ ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣೆ ಮಾಡಿ ದೀರ್ಘದಂಡ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ ಮುಗಿಸಿದವನೇ ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಹಸನ್ಮುಖಿಯಾದ ಗುರುನಾಥರು. ನಾಲ್ಕನೆಯ ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ ಗುರುನಾಥರಿಗೆ ಮಾಡಿದೆ. ಅವರು "ಏನ್ ಸಾರ್ ಇದೇನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೀರಿ' ಎಂದು ತಮಾಷೆ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಗುರುವೇ ಒಳಗೂ ಹೊರಗೂ ನೀವೇ ಆಗಿರುವಾಗ - ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಲೇ ನನ್ನ ಗಂಟಲು ತುಂಬಿ ಬಂದಿತ್ತು.... ಮೌನಕ್ಕೆ ಶರಣಾಗಿದ್ದೆ". 

ಪ್ರಿಯ ನಿತ್ಯ ಸತ್ಸಂಗಾಸಕ್ತ ಗುರುಬಾಂಧವರೇ... ಇದು ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲ. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಅನಂತಣ್ಣನವರಿಗೆ ಆದ ಗುರುಕೃಪೆಯ ಒಂದು ಕಿರುಪರಿಚಯ. ವಿಶಾಲ ಹೃದಯಿಯಾದ ಅವರು ನಮಗಾಗಿ ಹಂಚಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದು ಅವರ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಗುಣ. 

ಗುರುಸೇವೆಗೆ ಅವರಿವರೆಂಬ ಬೇಧವಿಲ್ಲ. ಆ ರೀತಿ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಗುರುನಾಥರಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಯಾರಿಗೂ ಇಂತಹಾ ಅನುಭವವಾದೀತು. ನಿತ್ಯ ಸತ್ಸಂಗ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಅತ್ತ ಒಯ್ಯಲಿ. ನಮಗೂ ಅಂತಹ ಭಾಗ್ಯ ಸಿಗಲಿ. ನಾಳೆಯೂ ಬರುವಿರಲ್ಲವೇ.. ಸತ್ಸಂಗದ ಸವಿಯುಣಲು....

Chapter 4 -  Meet him on the way itself

A little later the lady started sharing another experience.

Once we visited the advaitha peetha near Tumkur along with some of my friends and we were traveling towards Sringeri. On the way our conversations were mainly about Gurunatha. One of my friends asked me... “You were telling us, the last two times you were unable to meet Gurunatha, I am here for the first time, and do you think we will be able to meet him this time?”

My reply was... “It all depends on your luck, if you are lucky you may meet him on the way itself”.

Just then our car reached the spot where Gurunatha was standing on the road. We could not believe our own eyes. We jumped out of the car and bowed to him. I asked him “How is this possible?”

Gurunatha’s reply was... “You should know, you were the one who said”.

Recently, I heard the other side of this story from a Chickmaglur based devotee. He said, that day Gurunatha asked us to prepare coffee. Even before we could serve him coffee, he ran out of our house as if he had remembered something very important, he came to the main road and stood there. We were not aware then, he wanted to make a devotee’s words about ‘Meeting him on the way itself’ come true, the Chickmaglur based devotee said.

What I had said for the sake of conversation, Gurunatha had made that come true, can you see a similar compassion anywhere else?

After a brief pause, the lady started sharing another experience.

Once we had come to Gurunatha’s residence and along with him we traveled to Chickmaglur. We wanted to visit the nearby Advaitha peetha’s seer from there. But, Gurunatha was not letting us leave. After waiting for some time we told Gurunatha we want to go to Advaitha peetha and the seer may be in fact waiting for us.

Gurunatha replied... “A Guru has to wait, once a disciple accepts someone as his Guru, it is Guru’s job to take care of his disciple and wait for him if need be”. Already it was very late. From there we traveled for about three hours and came to the advaitha peetha. We saw the seer there waiting for us.

He told us...“Please come, I was actually waiting for you, by now the math will be closed so I will ask food to be arranged for you here in the Guru Bhavana itself”

We were surprised to see that... the seer was actually repeating the same words that Gurunatha had told us a little earlier and the time then was around 11 pm.

She concluded her experience by saying. . .”though we have the blessings of many seers, the only one who has stood by us in our happy and sad times is our Gurunatha, this has been my faith as well as experience”.

ಅಧ್ಯಾಯ - 21

ಯತಿಯ ಉಪದೇಶದಲಿ ಪ್ರೇತಕೆ । ಮತಿಯ ಬಂತು ಔದುಂಬರದೊಳಾ ।

ಸತಿಗೆ ಸಂತಸವಿತ್ತನಿಪ್ಪತ್ತೊಂದರಲಿ ಗುರುವು  ।। 21  ।।

ಔದುಂಬರದಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಗುರುವನ್ನು ಧ್ಯಾನಿಸುತ್ತ, ಗುರುವರದಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಈ ಮಗು ದೀರ್ಘಾಯುಷಿ. ಇದು ಅಕಾಲಮರಣ ಹೊಂದುವ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆಯೇ ಇಲ್ಲವೆಂದು ಪ್ರಲಾಪಿಸುತ್ತಾ ರಾತ್ರಿ ಆಕೆ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ನಿದ್ದೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಸ್ವಪ್ನದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದ ಗುರುಗಳು "ನಿನ್ನ ಭಾವನೆಗೆ ತಕ್ಕ ಫಲವಿದ್ದೇ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ" ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿ ಆ ಮಗುವನ್ನು ಬದುಕಿಸಿದಂತೆ ಕನಸು ಕಾಣುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಬೆಳಗಾದುದರಿಂದ ಊರ ಜನಗಳು "ಇನ್ನು ಈ ಸತ್ತ ಶಿಶು ದುರ್ವಾಸನೆಗೀಡಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಸಂಸ್ಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಅವಳು ಮಗುವನ್ನು ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾಳೆ" ಎಂದು ಚಿಂತಿಸುತ್ತ ಬಂದಾಗ ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯ ಕಾದಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಮಗುವು ಆಟವಾಡುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಆ ದಂಪತಿಗಳು ಇದನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ತಾವು ಕಂಡದ್ದು ಸ್ವಪ್ನವಲ್ಲ, ನಿಜವೆಂದು ಅರಿತು ಗುರುವನ್ನು ಕೊಂಡಾಡುವ ಘಟನೆ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತೊಂದನೆಯ ಅಧ್ಯಾಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ.

ಗುರುನಾಥ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರ  ಕುಸುಮಾಂಜಲಿ 

ವಾಕ್ಯಾನುಕರಣಂ ತಪಃ

ಗುರುದೃಷ್ಟಿಸಮಂ ಪುಣ್ಯಂ |

ಗುರುನಾಮಸಮಂ ಜಪಃ 

ನ ಸೋಸ್ತೀತಿ ಸಮಂ ಭಾವಃ ||

ಗುರುವಾಕ್ಯವನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸುವುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ದೊಡ್ಡ ತಪಸ್ಸಿಲ್ಲ. ಗುರುದೃಷ್ಟಿಗೆ ಸಮಾನವಾದ ಪುಣ್ಯವೂ ಬೇರೊಂದಿಲ್ಲ. ಗುರುನಾಮಸ್ಮರಣೆಗೆ ಮಿಗಿಲಾದ ಜಪವು ಬೇರೊಂದಿಲ್ಲ. ಗುರುವು ಸದಾ ನಮ್ಮೊಡನೆ ಸದಾ ಇರುವನೆಂಬ ಭಾವಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಮಿಗಿಲಾವುದೂ ಇಲ್ಲ.

A Tamilnadu based couple used to visit Gurunatha’s house often. They had been blessed by many seers including seers of Advaitha peetha in Tamilnadu. They were also staunch devotees of Gurunatha. Once at their residence in Tamilnadu they had arranged 60th year shanthi. All preparations for Sumangali Puja (a ritual in which married women are offered respects) were made and just when the married women who had especially been invited for this ritual were being called into the house after performing an aarti, a beggar woman wearing torn clothes came to their doorstep and asked for some clothes to be given as alms.

The lady of the house wanted to give a saree to that woman; however the seniors who had gathered there objected to that and said it would be against the practice of the ritual, till the invited married women are given clothes the woman begging at the doorstep has to wait. Trying to find a way out of this predicament the lady spoke to the beggar woman and asked her to return after a few minutes and she can have sumptuous food along with a saree.

After the puja the beggar woman never returned and turning away a needy woman on the day of Sumangali Puja kept lingering in the mind of the couple. Days passed by, the devotee couple visited many seers across Tamilnadu and Karnataka and came to Gurunatha’s house as well.

At the moment when they were about to enter Gurunatha’s house, they found a beggar woman asking for clothes who had an uncanny resemblance to the woman they had turned away on the day of Sumangali Puja. Gurunatha invited the beggar woman inside, offered her milk, fruits and other things and made sure this couple handed over a saree to her and paid their respects. As soon as they finished, he said “Now, the mistake has been corrected isn’t it?”

The couple in their minds thanked Gurunatha’s compassion for correcting their mistake. To the visitors who had gathered, Gurunatha had a message ...”We invite people who have more than 25 sarees at their home and give them sarees again and again. However, if a woman in torn clothes asks for a saree we won’t feel like giving, why is it so?”

The lady who recounted this experience said... “During this incident he corrected our mistake and made us aware of the real meaning of Sumangali Puja through his compassion. It is unfortunate that we cannot offer him anything in return”

ಸತಿಯ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಪಿಶಾಚ ಬಾಧೆಯ । ಗತಿಗೆ ಹಚ್ಚುತ ಸ್ತ್ರೀಗೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟರು ।

ಸುತರ ಮರಣದಿ ಜ್ಞಾನವಿಪ್ಪತ್ತರಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟನಲಾ ।। 20  ।।

ಶಿರೋಳ ಎಂಬ ಊರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬ ಗಂಡಹೆಂಡತಿಯರಿದ್ದರು. ನಿಷ್ಠಾವಂತರು. ಆದರೆ ಅವರ ಪೂರ್ವಜನ್ಮ ಪ್ರಾರಬ್ಧದಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಮಕ್ಕಳುಗಳೆಲ್ಲಾ ಸತ್ತು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಜ್ಯೋತಿಷ್ಕರನ್ನು ಕೇಳಲಾಗಿ "ನಿನಗೆ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮರಾಕ್ಷಸನ ಬಾಧೆ ಇದೆ. ಪೂರ್ವಜನ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ನೀನು ಒಬ್ಬರಿಂದ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡ ಹಣ ಕೊಡದೆ ಆತನು ಆತ್ಮಹತ್ಯೆ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಪಿಶಾಚಿಯಾಗಿ ಈ ರೀತಿಯಾಗಿ ಸೇಡು ತೀರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ಅವನ ಹಣ ತೀರಿಸಲು ನಿನಗೆ ಅಸಾಧ್ಯ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ, ಗುರುಸೇವೆಯಿಂದ ನಿನಗೆ ಅದರಿಂದ ಮುಕ್ತಿ ದೊರೆಯುತ್ತದೆ" ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. 

ಅದರಂತೆ ಗುರುಗಳ ಬಳಿ ಬಂದ ಆ ದಂಪತಿಗಳು ಅನನ್ಯ ಸೇವೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಗುರುಕೃಪೆಯಿಂದ ಜನಿಸಿದ ಮಗನು ದಿನದಿಂದ ದಿನಕ್ಕೆ ಬೆಳೆದು, ಆತನ ಚೌಲಕರ್ಮ ಮಾಡುವ ದಿನ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸಂಭ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವಾಗ ಆ ಮಗುವು ಮರಣ ಹೊಂದುತ್ತದೆ. ಗುರುವಿನ ವರದಿಂದ ಪಡೆದ ಪುತ್ರನ ಈ ಸಾವಿಗಾಗಿ ಪರಿತಪಿಸಿ ಗುರುವಿನ ಬಳಿ ಬಂದಾಗ ಗುರುಗಳು ಈ ನಶ್ವರ ಸಂಬಂಧಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಉಪದೇಶ ನೀಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಸಂಜೆಯಾದರೂ ಮೃತ ಮಗುವನ್ನು ಸಂಸ್ಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಅವಳು ನೀಡದಾಗ, ಊರಿನವರು ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ ಬರೋಣವೆಂದು ಹೊರಟು ಹೋಗುವ ವಿಚಾರವು ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತನೆಯ ಅಧ್ಯಾಯವಾಗಿದೆ.

ಯಾರು ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸದ್ಗುರುವಿನ ಧ್ಯಾನ ಮಾಡುವರೋ...ಯಾರ ಮಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸದ್ಗುರುವಿನ ಸ್ತುತಿ ಇರುವುದೋ...ಅಂತಹವರ ಮನೆಮನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅವ್ಯಕ್ತರೂಪವಾಗಿ ಗುರುವೇ ನೆಲಸುವನು...

Chapter 2 -  Name for the bag

It was probably the winter of 2002, till then Charanadasa (myself) did not have an opportunity to stay at Gurunatha’s house. One probable reason could be Gurunatha and his family never accepted outsiders without assessing their conduct. But, once they were convinced they took the person in as family. Around this time I was slowly entrusted various responsibilities around the house.

After a few days I heard through an acquaintance about Gurunatha mentioning that my presence in his house gave him a lot of assurance and let him free to focus on his work/travel. He always used to carry a cotton bag with him... Sometimes he used to send his offerings to Math/shrines in that bag. The bag used to accompany him wherever he went. He always carried it as an accessory to his simple outfit.

One day when l was busy in my daily duties, Gurunatha returned from Chickmaglur in a disciple’s car and left the bag in the car. The car owner later came back to return the bag. Then Gurunatha told his disciples around, “We should keep a name for this bag. It is always with me what would be an apt name for such a thing?” Gurunatha wondered aloud, disciples there were clueless and just smiled. Later Gurunatha himself suggested that we should name this bag after ‘Him’ just like the bag he is also with me always...

Right from that day, Gurunatha has been mending my ways, slowly transforming me into a better individual in many aspects and helping me out of my predicaments even after he left this world. His compassion and kindness are unparalleled in this world. Till his very last days he used to tell me... ” Aiah wherever you go, I shall follow you like a demon, will be on your back always no matter how hard you try to escape”. Some of his words like these make sense now, every time I cross a hurdle, prevail over a hardship. They also make me wonder... what we can offer in return for a man who dedicated a better part of his life just to take care of people like me.

This might have been around 2009; I had given my job related details to an officer who held a high post in the Government at that time since he had insisted on having them. A few days later I called him and told while I was grateful that he was keen on helping me in this regard, I did not want him to pursue this any further, I shall approach him again in future should that be necessary.

Later on while I was updating Gurunatha about this, he asked me why did I do such a thing?

I replied, though he is a high ranked officer in the Government he has come to you seeking help in resolving his problems. I would not want to lose the sight of the Sun trying to hold on to a small twinkling light. I request you... Henceforth you should not ask anyone for favour and be in obligation for my job’s sake. I am ready to wait as long as it takes while being with you. But, you should never separate our ways and make me an orphan.

On hearing this... Gurunatha held my hand in his and gently rubbed it with a smile saying...”Sure, you shall not have to ask anyone else in this matter henceforth, you are bound to win, rest assured”

The exams I wrote with the burning ambition of civil services had come under a legal tangle due to a corrupt system. Gurunatha’s kind words and assurance were my only solace during those turbulent times.

ಮತ್ತೆ ಸಂಗಮಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಹತ್ತೊಂಬತ್ತರಲಿ ಬಂದಾ  ।। 19  ।।

ಮುಂದೆ ಗುರುಗಳು ನರಸೋಬವಾಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದು, ಕೃಷ್ಣಾ ಮತ್ತು ಪಂಚಗಂಗಾ ಸಂಗಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ನಾನ ಮಾಡಿ ಧ್ಯಾನ ನಿರತರಾಗಿರುವಾಗ, ಅರವತ್ತನಾಲ್ಕು ಯೋಗಿನಿಯರು ಬಂದು, ಗುರುವನ್ನು ಸೇವಿಸಿ - ಗುರುಗಳನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗಿ ಸೇವೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಸಂಗಮವು ಗುರುಗಳಿಗೆ ದಾರಿ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಕೊಡುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಒಂದು ದಿನ ಗಂಗಾನುಜನೆಂಬ ಒಬ್ಬ ರೈತನು ಇದನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದನು. ನದಿ ದಾರಿ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಕೊಟ್ಟಾಗ ಆತನೂ ಗುರುಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಸಾಗಿ, ಅಲ್ಲಿ ವೈಭವೋಪೇತವಾದ ಮಹಾನಗರಿಯನ್ನು ಕಂಡು, ಗುರುಗಳು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯರಲ್ಲ, ಸಿದ್ಧ ಪುರುಷರೆಂಬುದನ್ನು ಅರಿತು ಅವರಿಗೆ ನಮಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಗುರುಗಳು ಮಂದಹಾಸ ಬೀರುತ್ತಾ ಆತನನ್ನು ಹರಸಿ, 'ಈ ವಿಷಯವನ್ನು ಯಾರಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ತಿಳಿಸಬೇಡ. ಹಾಗೆ ಒಂದು ವೇಳೆ ಪ್ರಕಟಪಡಿಸಿದರೆ ಅಂದೇ ನಿನ್ನ ಕೊನೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುವ ವಿಶೇಷ ಪ್ರಸಂಗವು ಹತ್ತೊಂಬತ್ತನೆಯ ಅಧ್ಯಾಯ.

ಕಿತ್ತಿ ಘೇವಡೆ ಬಳ್ಳಿಯನು ತಾ ನಿತ್ಯನೈ ಕುಂಭವನು ಬಡವಗೆ ।

ವಿಸ್ತರಿಸುತಾ ಮಹಿಮೆ ಹದಿನೆಂಟರಲಿ ಗುರುವಾರನಾ  ।। 18  ।।

ಮುಂದೆ ಗುರುಗಳು ಔದುಂಬರದಿಂದ ನರಸೋಬವಾಡಿಗೆ ಬರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಹನ್ನೆರಡು ವರ್ಷಗಳು ಇರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕೃಷ್ಣಾ ನದಿ ದಂಡೆಯ ಆಚೆಗಿರುವ 'ಅವರವಾಡ'ದ ಒಬ್ಬ ಬಡ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣನ ಮನೆಗೆ ನಿತ್ಯ ಭಿಕ್ಷೆಗೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಒಂದು ದಿನ ಗುರುಗಳು ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಹೋದಾಗ, ಮನೆಯ ಯಜಮಾನ ಭಿಕ್ಷೆಗೆ ಹೋದವನು ಇನ್ನೂ ಬಂದಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಮನೆಯೊಡತಿಯು ಗುರುಗಳನ್ನು ಆದರದಿಂದ ಕರೆದು ಕೂರಿಸಿ ನಮಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಮನೆಯವರಿಗೆ ಏನೂ ದೊರೆಯದ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, ಅವರ ಮನೆಯ ಮುಂದಿದ್ದ ಅವರೇ ಬಳ್ಳಿಯ ಕಾಳುಗಳೇ ಆಹಾರವಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಮನೆಯೊಡತಿ ಅವರೇ ಕಾಯಿಗಳನ್ನೇ ಕಿತ್ತು ತಂದು ಭಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಗುರುವಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಗುರುಗಳು ಹೊರ ಹೋಗುವಾಗ ಆ ಅವರೇ ಬಳ್ಳಿಯನ್ನು ಕಿತ್ತೆಸೆದು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇದರಿಂದ ದುಃಖಿತಳಾದ ಹೆಂಡತಿ ಗಂಡ ಬಂದ ಮೇಲೆ ಇದನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಸಿ, 'ನಾವು ಆ ಯತಿಗಳಿಗೇನು ಅಪರಾಧ ಮಾಡಿದಿವಿ' ಎಂದು ನೊಂದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಆದರೆ ಸಾತ್ವಿಕನಾದ ಪತಿಯು 'ಯತಿಗಳನ್ನು ನಿಂದಿಸಬೇಡ, ಎಲ್ಲದಕ್ಕೂ ಒಂದು ಕಾರಣವಿರುತ್ತದೆ.' ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾ, ಅವರೇ ಬಳ್ಳಿಯನ್ನು ಪೂರ್ತಿಯಾಗಿ ಕೀಳುವಾಗ ಹೊನ್ನಿನ ಕುಡಿಕೆ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ. 'ತಮ್ಮ ಬಡತನ ತೊಲಗಿಸಲು ಗುರುವು ಮಾಡಿದ ಲೀಲೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡು' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದ ಪತಿ, ಮಡದಿಯೊಡನೆ ಗುರುಗಳ ಬಳಿ ಹೋಗಿ ಆಶೀರ್ವಾದ ಪಡೆವ, ಗುರುಕರುಣೆಯ ಲೀಲೆ ಹದಿನೆಂಟನೆಯ ಅಧ್ಯಾಯ.

ಹೇ ಸದ್ಗುರುವೇ..ಆತ್ಮಬಂಧುವೇ..ಪಾರಮಾರ್ಥಿಕ ವಿದ್ಯೆಯನ್ನು ಕಲಿಯಲು..ಸೋಹಂ ಎಂಬ ಆತ್ಮಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯಲು ಮನೋದೃಢತೆಯನ್ನು ದಯಪಾಲಿಸು..ಗುರುವೇ ಕರುಣಿಸು...

ಗುರುವರನ ನೆನೆ ಮನವೇ

ಸದ್ಗುರುವರನ ನೆನೆ ಮನವೇ ||

ಅಗಣಿತಗುಣಗಣ ಭೂಷಿತನವನೇ

ಆನಂದ ರೂಪಿ ಅಂತರ್ಯಾಮಿ ||

ತಮವ ಕಳೆಯುವವನವನೇ

ತನ್ಮಯತೆ ನೀಡುವವನವನೇ

ತಾರತಮ್ಯವಿರದಂಥಾ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಾ

ಸಕಲ ಭಕುತರಿಗೆ ನೀಡುವನವನೇ ||

ಸಾಧನೆಯೊಳಗಡಗಿಹನೇ

ಸಾತ್ವಿಕತೆಗೆ ಒಲಿಯುವನೇ

ಸಾಹುಕಾರರಾ ಅಂಕೆಗೆ ಸಿಗದಾ

ಸಾಧು ಸತ್ಪುರುಷನು ಇವನೇ ||

ಸಖರಾಯಪುರದೊಳು ಇಹನೇ

ಅವಧೂತನಾಗಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿಹನೇ

ಅಂಬಾಸುತನಾ ಅನವರತ ಪೋಷಿಸಿ

ಅನಂತ ತಾನಾಗಿಹನೇ

Chapter 1 - Birth

Our Gurunatha came to this world as a son of Kudlur Srinivasaiah and Sharadamma during the later part of 1940(Magha Shuddha Shashti according to the lunar calendar). His family included five sisters and a brother. It had been almost four generations since they settled in Sakharaya Patna from their native called Kudlur near Tarikere in central Karnataka

The family was doing well and was always looking forward to help those in need and was run by his father who was well known for discipline and a sound knowledge of astrology. Each of his words conveyed a lot of wisdom/knowledge Gurunatha used to say. Gurunatha was in Bangalore to study Bachelor of Science in Vijaya College under the guidance of veteran Professor G Venkatasubbaiah. But, he had to cut short his studies on account of his father’s ill health.

Though he seemed to lead a normal family life after having married a girl from the same town and having two daughters and a son from her, Gurunatha used question himself about the happenings and the things around him and strived to understand the inner meaning of these happenings or what caused them. He had fond memories of his childhood days when his father used to imbibe moral values in them through short stories.

His father had rightly predicted that many people will visit his house in future and had told him he should never send back anyone empty handed. His father’s death put the family responsibility completely on him. He fulfilled these responsibilities well even as his mind was always in a search for the inner meaning/real essence of life. But, untimely death of his beloved brother became an important turning point in his life. Once a progressive farmer, he slowly started losing interest in farming, he was heard working as care taker in Saguna Ranganatha and Ballaleshwara temples. He even had a short stay at a relative’s house in Bangalore doing odd chores, selling small fancy items part-time.

Gurunatha used to say ‘Locking oneself in a room is not true Adhyathma, fulfilling all of our duties, having no expectations, facing life’s hurdles, ignoring all misgivings, and leaving all our worries to Eshwara is called real Adhyathma and not running away from your responsibilities’.

Guru will only expect a pure mental state from his disciple, his caste and clan won’t matter, as they have no significance for Guru. They were created by men to serve their interests. The following incident will illustrate this...

A person belonging to a different caste used to do chores at Gurunatha’s house right from his father’s days. Though an illiterate, he used to hear Ramayana and Mahabharatha recitals from Gurunatha’s father from a distance. He was so much influenced by these that one day he decided to leave everything behind at night,came out of his house holding a single blanket. Just when he was about to lock the door, he realised that, he should not be doing it, as caring for his house would be right against what he had set out to do. So he left the door unlocked and set out into the darkness.

Later on he continued to serve Gurunatha for many years leading a pious life. This is one such incident that illustrates the values and ethos imbibed in everyone who was associated with Gurunatha’s house.

Later on Gurunatha himself became very engrossed in his sadhana, his family, relatives or neighbours didn’t have clue about this. He used to wear a simple shirt and a dhoti; he used to keep a small towel and a bag with himself always as his constant companions. His wife used to wash and dry the same clothes for him by the time he finished his daily worship. The couple used to visit shrines in Kudli, Sringeri and other holy places while it seemed they were going through their normal routine life of a house holder. Gurunatha might have attained Athma-Jnana (spiritual enlightenment) or the world got a first glimpse of his powers when he was 48, probably around 1988.

Eashwara means the lord who gives what you ask for... Never ask him for anything. Just be in his service and fulfil your duties and he will give you everything you need were Gurunatha’s words…..,,,,,

ಚಂಚಲತೆಯಾ ನಾ ತೊರೆವೇ ||

ಸಜ್ಜನ ಸಹವಾಸ ನೀಡುತಲಿ

ಸ್ವಾನಂದಾಮೃತ ಸುರಿಸುತಲೀ

ಸೋಹಂಭಾವವ ತುಂಬುತಲೀ

ಬಾರಯ್ಯ ಗುರುವರ ಹರಸುತಲೀ ||

ಕಾಮಕ್ರೋಧವ ಅಳಿಸುತಲೀ

ಕರುಣಾಮೃತವಾ ಹರಿಸುತಲೀ

ಆತ್ಮ ಜ್ಯೋತಿಯ ಬೆಳಗುತಲೀ

ಬಾರಯ್ಯ ಗುರುವರ ಹರಸುತಲೀ ||

ಬಾ ಬಾ ಬಾ ಬಾ ಗುರುವರಾ

ತಾ ತಾ ತಾ ತಾ ನಿಜವರಾ

ನಾ ನಾ ನಾ ನಾ ನಿನ್ನಾ ದಾಸಾ

ಇದ್ದ ಪಾಪಗಳಾ ತಾನಿಲ್ಲವಾಗಿಸೀ ಪುಣ್ಯದ ಹೊರೆಯಾ 

ಭಕುತರ ಮೇಲಿರಿಸೇ ||

ಕಾಷಾಯಾಂಬರ ಧರಿಸದವನೂ

ದಂಡಕಮಂಡಲ ಪಿಡಿಯಾದವನೂ

ಮಠಮಾನ್ಯವ ಕಟ್ಟಿಸೀ ಪೀಠದಿ ಕೂರದವನೂ

ಸನ್ಯಾಸಿ ಎನಿಸದೇ ಮನಸನ್ಯಾಸ ಹೊಂದಿದಂಥಾ ||

ದಟ್ಟಿಯೊಂದನ್ನೂ ಸುತ್ತಿಕೊಂಡವನೂ

ಅತಿ ಸರಳತೆಗೇ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ ಇವನೂ

ಕಷ್ಟವೆಂದು ಬಂದಾ ಭಕ್ತರ ಇಷ್ಟ ಪಾಲಿಸುವವನೂ

ಧರೆಯನುದ್ದರಿಸೇ ಬಂದಾ ದತ್ತಾವತಾರಿಯಾದಾ ||

ಧರೆಯೊಳುತ್ತಮವಾದಾ ಸಖರಾಯಪುರದೊಳು

ಸಾತ್ವಿಕರೂಪದೀ ನೆಲೆನಿಂಥಾ ಸದ್ಗುರೂ

ಅಂಬಾಸುತನಾ ಅನವರತ ಪೋಷಿಸುತಿಹಾ

Introduction

It is said, it takes many lifespans for someone to realise that there is a supreme creator who is responsible for such a wonderful creation around them. Of those who realize this very small number of people will surrender to the supreme and even fewer get an able Guru who can help them seek him.

This author was one of the few fortunate to have a Guru, his unparalleled affection and compassion I have tried to record through a series of incidents, some which I have witnessed myself a few others were narrated to me by other devotees I had known. A few other devotees actually called me up after reading an earlier version (in Kannada) and requested me to record their own experiences and this enabled me to meet numerous devotees of Gurunatha whom I had not known earlier, which made me realise the number of souls blessed by my Gurunatha is far more than I had imagined. Recording these experiences has been an experience by itself given to me by my Gurunatha.

A conscious effort has been made to keep the language simple and leave out the identities (including that of myself, called Charanadasa hereafter) and to focus on the message given by Gurunatha through each of these incidents. It was Gurunatha’s specialty to give us Adhyathmic lessons even in our daily mundane activities. He had reached the pinnacle of Adhyathmic sadhana and attained the highest possible state for a human called ‘Avadhuta’. Many used to call him by that name as well. However, Gurunatha did not approve of it being used as a title and he was heard many times clarifying the same. One in that state will be in eternal bliss; he does not follow the customs laid down by the scriptures including the vernas.

The word itself when split has the following meaning.

Aa (pronounced Aa..) = “aksharatpat”..(which cannot be destroyed)

Va = “Varenyatpat” (very big)

Dhu = “Dhuta samsara bandhanat” (One who has kicked out the cycle of transmigration)

Tha = “Thathvamasi” (as explained in these sayings.. a state in which being by oneself.)

Dhutha — is also sometimes explained as one who helps cleaning the dust (“Dhulu”, the dust of samsara).

It is said the devotees who get an avadhuta as their Guru are very fortunate….,,,,
