Chapter 112 : The caretaker
Wherever Gurunatha stayed there was
no shortage of food and water. If someone nearby wished that he/she wanted to
eat something but did not have the means to do so Gurunatha would immediately
respond to his/her feelings and get what he/she wished for.
An old lady who stayed very close to
Gurunatha’s house used to sell flowers for a living. No matter how hard she
tried, she was not able to sell much and always found herself struggling for
basic needs. Gurunatha came to know about this and started buying flowers from
her and sometimes giving more money than what she asked for. Whenever we were
to visit any temple or math he used to send me to her house to get flowers and sometimes
to distribute sweets and clothes after such visits. Slowly her life became much
more comfortable than what it used to be.
In another instance, a person came
in (probably from north Karnataka). When Gurunatha asked him what he wanted, he
said, “I have a wife and two kids but now I don’t want to lead a family life
anymore. I want to become a Sanyasi, you must bless me”. Gurunatha got a bit
angry at him and shouted.. ”Do you even know the meaning of the word Sanyasi?”,
the person was speechless. Then Gurunatha continued, if you want understand what
Sanyasa means you must donate everything you have and stand on the road then
you will understand what Sanyasa means. That person was sitting still with a
blank mind after hearing Gurunatha’s words.
A little later he bowed to
Gurunatha, went out and gave out whatever he had.. watch, chain and money to the
people who were walking around. He spent one day like this with no money for
food also. Later he came to Gurunatha’s residence when the hunger was
unbearable. He got food but did not get a place to stay. It was winter and he
had to spend the night next to the open well near Gurunatha’s residence.
This went on for about two days and
then Gurunatha called him inside. He told that person..
“See,if you wanted to become a
Sanyasi, you should have thought about it before marriage. Now your wife and
two kids are dependent on you, if you leave them stranded it will be against
Dharma (principle that controls the universe, one’s conduct must be conforming
to that). Their pain and suffering will hinder your progress as Sanyasi.”
Hearing these words that person bowed his head.
“Turning your family away and
escaping from your responsibilities is not Sanyasa. While being in the family performing
your duties diligently and offering the results of that to God is real Sanyasa.
As a lotus born in mud won’t have even a small amount of mud on it. Live a life
similar to that”. With these words Gurunatha gave him some clothes and money
and sent him back.
