Chapter 87 : Guru is for Solitude
An army man came to know about
Gurunatha through one of his relatives and desperately wanting to meet him,
came to Gurunatha’s residence at 1.30 at midnight and knocked the door.
Gurunatha himself having a lantern in his hand opened the door. He asked us to
make arrangements for that person to sleep and told him they shall talk the next
day. Gurunatha’s house was not crowded those days.
The next day Gurunatha walked around
the town with him and was seen introducing this person to everyone he met and
told them “See this person has come from Bangalore to see me”. Gurunatha kept
him at his residence for two days and most part of those two days he was heard
telling that person “A Guru will be seen only in solitude and not in a group”.
Later Gurunatha sent him back saying those exact words again that next time he
should come alone.
As he had got attracted towards
Guru, he started to do regular visits and later thanks to Guru’s blessings started
working in Mysore in central government service. He continued his practice of
visits whenever he got time from his schedule and did whatever service he could
at Gurunatha’s residence and went back.
During one of these visits while
returning Gurunatha told him “There will be one seat in the front of the bus,
you should sit there”, blessed him and sent him back. Once he got on the bus
contrary to what Gurunatha had said he found only one vacant seat that too at
the rear end of the bus. A bit worried but without any other option he sat
there and started the journey. A little later one person got down from the
front row and he saw a vacant seat in the front row. Thanking Gurunatha in his
mind he sat in the first row. His earlier seat was occupied by another commuter.
As the bus was traveling a vehicle coming from behind hit it and the commuter
who had occupied his earlier seat died in the accident.
On seeing this first hand, it dawned
on him as to why Gurunatha insisted that he should sit in the first row. He
profusely thanked Gurunatha in his mind for his kindness towards him throughout
the journey.
This incident was explained to me
very recently and the person’s eyes were filled with tears recounting those days.
An unparalleled devotion towards Guru, a pure state of mind, not venturing into
others’ affairs were key takeaways for me from this devotee.
