Chapter 104 : Vidyatheertha
A devotee working in a private bank
was a regular visitor to Gurunatha’s house. Once he found himself facing an
allegation for misappropriation of funds. The charges were serious and he was
facing the threat of losing his job. He came to Gurunatha’s residence and
explained his situation and conveyed that he was being punished for no fault of
his.
Then Gurunatha assured him, ”You
need not worry, you grew up with a Guru when you were a kid, he taught you
swimming and other skills, he shall take care of you”.
The devotee had to leave for Head
office, to submit a written explanation against the allegations. Gurunatha
suggested he should carry two neem twigs. “On the way you will find a village
(giving the name of the village) you will meet a tall man, who will wave at you
and stop you. You give him a lift to wherever he wants to go and your work will
be done with ease. But, take care not to stop the vehicle anywhere till you see
that person”
The devotee started towards his head
office, after traveling a little distance he realized that he had forgotten
about neem twigs but remembered he should not stop the vehicle. With no other
option he just prayed to Gurunatha and continued his journey. It was rainy
season and a gentle breeze was hitting him from the front. All of a sudden he
noticed a small branch of tree that came in with the breeze and got entangled
to his bike. On checking he found it to be a neem twig. He thanked Gurunatha
and continued his journey. When he reached the village a man waved and stopped
him as told by Gurunatha. No words were spoken the stranger jumped and sat
behind him as if they were an old acquaintance. The devotee drove for about 50
kms without talking to him. As he was nearing his destination, a thought
crossed his mind that he should now check with the stranger about his
destination and drop him there. As if his thoughts were read, the stranger
asked him to stop the vehicle and got down.
Devotee asked him “Sir, what is your
name?”
The stranger gave his name and left.
Though Gurunatha had already told him what his name would be, devotee was still
surprised on hearing it, it was the name of the Guru he had grown up with as a
child.
When the devotee reached his head
office, he found his superior to be in a cheerful mood. The devotee gave him
the letter he had brought along and started offering his explanation. The
superior cut him short saying “This will not be necessary, we have already
heard from you and are satisfied with your explanation”.
The devotee who was a bit puzzled
now said, “Sir, the explanation letter is still in my hand, you have not even
taken it from me”. The officer showed him an earlier letter he had received
about seven pages long which had the devotee’s signature and said he was
referring to it.
The devotee had never written such a
letter, with the firm belief that it was possible only because of Guru’s grace;
he shook hands with the superior and left the place without another word.
