Chapter 95 : Mantrakshatha
Once a seer belonging to an advaitha
peetha near Bangalore came to Gurunatha’s residence. As they would do to all
other seers and saints, Gurunatha and his wife did Paduka puja(a ruitual of
washing one’s feet) and other rituals as a mark of respect towards the seer.
When seated inside the seer started talking about some events happening around
and got engaged in some inappropriate conversations.
Gurunatha would not accept anyone
behaving in a way that would demean his/her position. On hearing these
conversations a visibly upset Gurunatha asked him bluntly, “Have you become a
sanyasi and sitting on the throne to engage in these conversations? A sanyasi
should be engaged in continuous penance, he should distribute the fruits of
that penance to commoners through mantrakshatha (unbroken rice grains that are
imbued with power of mantras). Tell me, what sanctity the mantrakshatha you are
going to distribute now will have?” After hearing that, the seer corrected
himself.
A devotee from Bangalore used to
come regularly to Sakharaya Patna. Once Gurunatha told him, “See you shall not
come here without asking my permission for a few months”. The devotee somehow
ignored Guru’s words and continued his visits. Gurunatha did not use his car.
During this time, the seer of the
famous advaitha peetha had come to Hassan. This devotee from Bangalore landed
in Sakharaya Patna on the previous night. Next day on his way to meet the seer
Gurunatha sat in another car and made two of the devotees from Sakharaya Patna
come along with the devotee from Bangalore. At Hassan after seer’s darshanam
was completed, Gurunatha called the devotee from Bangalore and instructed him
that he should reach Sakharaya Patna and then only he should leave for
Bangalore. Everyone in that car was given mantrakshatha given by the seer at
least two times and Gurunatha made sure each one of them had their fists full
with mantrakshatha while traveling. Other devotees who were bound to Shivamogga
were also told they were required at Sakharaya Patna. The Bangalore devotee’s
car on the way to Sakharaya Patna lost control and hit a tree. The impact was
so severe that car broke into pieces and looking at the car it was difficult to
believe that anyone inside would have survived.
Thanks to Gurunatha’s blessings
everyone in the car that day survived. The lady from Sakharaya Patna who was on
the rear seat was tossed from the rear seat to the front seat but the
mantrakshatha she had kept on her lap had not spilled.
Whenever I started on a journey, my
master would give me some mantrakshatha. This incident made meaware of its
significance.
