Chapter 103 : The most beautiful jewel a woman can wear

A Guru does not belong to any caste; a good conduct and a series of good deeds done in the previous lives will define one’s caste to Guru. Whenever someone with these qualities is in trouble and seeks help Guru will rush to save him.

There was one devotee at about 100 kms away from Gurunatha’s place. Gurunatha has shown many miracles through him. He was in service, and was traveling about 5 kms everyday to his office. Everyday Gurunatha would call him before he left for office and tell him the situations he may have to face and remedy if any required.

One morning Gurunatha called him and asked him to carry a pack of cigarette, a saree and some clothes. Devotee bought all the things as instructed and was just about reaching his office and saw one person by the road side abusing his wife. Devotee stopped his vehicle and asked the reason for his behavior. In his reply that
person said, “See Sir, she won’t give me money to smoke, I desperately need cigarettes now. So, I am beating her”. Devotee asked him “Will you stop beating her if I give you cigarettes?” He readily agreed.

The devotee thought Gurunatha might have asked him to carry cigarettes for this purpose and gave the cigarettes to him. After getting the cigarettes that person stopped beating his wife and was getting ready to leave the place. The bystanders who had seen his behavior till now got ready to beat him up. The lady who was badly
bruised with clothes torn by her husband’s blows now stood for her husband’s rescue. She pleaded to the crowd not to beat her husband. The crowd that had gathered gradually disappeared. The devotee thought.. “In spite of getting beaten up black and blue by her husband, leaving all that behind the lady rushed to her husband’s rescue when he was in trouble, this probably is the hallmark of Indian culture”.

With these thoughts devotee decided the saree must surely be meant for her and gave her the saree and other clothes he was carrying. Just to test her he asked one last question before leaving, “Your husband was beating you so badly, why you rushed to save him from the blows?”

She replied, “What else can be done? Since I have married him, saving him is my duty” with these words she left the place.

Later talking about this incident Gurunatha had said, forgiveness is the most beautiful jewel a woman can possess. This type of conduct can only come by the virtue of their good deeds in the past lives no matter which caste they are born in the present life.
