Chapter 93 : Walk the talk

' Gurunatha expected his disciples and everyone around to ‘walk their talk’, as he led his own. As mentioned earlier Gurunatha had this routine of visiting Shiva temple everyday and distributing flowers and fruits, sweets on his way back. On some occasions when he was unable to keep up the routine he asked me to do it on his behalf.

Once during this routine a lady in one of the houses casually asked Gurunatha if he had finished his breakfast. Gurunatha replied in negative and asked what the lady has prepared in her house. The lady replied she had prepared ‘Dosa’ (a dish made out of rice batter). lmmediately to her surprise Gurunatha told her..”Will you give me some? I am very hungry”.

Thinking on her feet, the lady put forth a condition and said “I will give you Dosas, if you take your bath and come’. Gurunatha went to the open well next to her house, pulled a couple of bowls of water, splashed it over his own body came back to the lady and said, “I have finished my bath, can you give me Dosas now”?

The lady was almost in tears and bowed at Gurunatha’s feet. Actually she had not prepared any breakfast at her house that day. She had lied with the answer as Dosa and invited Gurunatha for breakfast just for the sake of courtesy, thinking that he would decline the invitation.

The priest’s son of a temple in Sakharaya Patna was in love with a girl living next door. The girl also loved him back. The lovers met Gurunatha once and sought his blessings. Gurunatha asked them to wait for some time. Meanwhile, the girl’s parents came to know about her love, they were opposed to this and complained against the priest and his son to the temple’s administrator. The administrator came to Gurunatha and put forth his suggestion. He said “The girl is still a minor, within a few months she would turn 18, as soon as she turns 18, I will personally make sure the marriage will take place according to her wish”. Gurunatha agreed and sent him back.

The girl turned 18 and waited for a few months. Even then the administrator did not carry out his promise and the girl’s parents started looking for other alliances. The boy came to know about what the girl’s parents were trying through her and approached Gurunatha again for help. Gurunatha met the administrator and asked him a blunt question.

“Why do you get into other’s affairs? Are you sitting here to do temple administration or for something else? You should not give your word on something, if you do, you should not turn your back on it. You should have thought before giving your word, once you had given your word, you should have fulfilled it. Is it not your duty to do so?”

“Now you shall live up to your words or see what I will do” said a visibly upset Gurunatha.

Once he came out, he made sure the boy and the girl assembled at a devotee’s house, asked them to exchange garlands, blessed them and distributed sweets. He even made sure the devotee performed the rituals of ‘handing over the bride’ to her in-laws. Not stopping at that, he made sure the newly married couple had their private moments for themselves at the same house. When the girl’s parents and the administrator came to know about this, without having any other option, accepted their love and performed their marriage in a marriage hall.
