Chapter 106 : Keeping his word
Once a devotee from a village near
Hassan had come to Gurunatha’s residence, he knew Gurunatha even before this
Charanadasa came to Gurunatha’s residence. ’ He was quite senior to me in age
and experience, I asked him to share some of his experiences with Gurunatha.
He started with these words.. “Sir,
it is difficult to find words that explain my Gurunatha, It is just an amazing experience,
but however I shall try to explain how he has been looking after us. My first
meeting with Gurunatha was around February 1992. I had been to his residence
along with my brother -in- law. After we were seated Gurunatha asked me a few
courtesy questions like my name, the place I am from etc. Once I answered them,
he called someone from inside to bring a calendar and asked him to read what
was written against today’s date. Gurunatha himself had made that person write
my name against that date indicating that such a person will come here. Gurunatha told him “See,
I had asked you to write such a person will come on this date isn’t it..? He is
here (pointing at me). Everyone there including me was surprised as it was my
first visit.
Later he asked me about the reason
for my visit, I told him about my wife who had gone to her father’s house and
fallen ill. He told me the hospital and ward where she was admitted and asked
me to go and pay a visit. I told him “she is not recognizing me because of some
neurological problem, she is pregnant as well, I am confused as to what I
should do”. Gurunatha gave me a small thing and asked me to keep it inside my
house. “I did as instructed, today my wife has completely recovered and we have
two kids. All our happiness is thanks to Gurunatha’s grace”.
In another instance, Gurunatha was
visiting a devotee’s house in our town. Coming to know about this I visited the
place along with my wife. Gurunatha immediately recognized me and asked me to
be seated. He looked at my wife and asked
“You cooked rice and tambuli (a side
dish), then thought I may not accept it and left it behind in your house isn’t
it?”
My wife nodded in agreement. Then
Gurunatha asked the lady in the house where he was visiting to go to our house
and get him some rice and dish. I gave her the keys to our house and shortly
afterwards saw Gurunatha eat what my wife had prepared, with gratitude.
In another instance, I received a
phone call from Gurunatha who said, “Today you will see three people in the
guise of sanyasi. They will visit your house, show you a box and ask you to
tell them what is inside.. Is that Sindhoor or Bhasma(ash from homa)? They will
ask you the same question 3 times. You tell them it is Sindhoor”.
As Gurunatha had said, three people
came to test me and asked the question, I answered as Gurunatha had told me.
They accepted their defeat apologized and went away. I realized how Gurunatha
was guarding us.
Each time I was about to return
after a visit to his house, he used to tell me..”You will get a bus at ..such a
time, it will go directly to your town, I would get the bus exactly he had
said. On a couple of occasions as there was no seat in that bus I took another
bus. Whenever I did that, the bus would break down. This reminded me that, I
should never use my own intelligence and overrule his words.
In another instance, I was seeking
his go ahead for my son’s upanayanam (sacred thread ceremony). He instructed me
to perform the function at my house not stopping at that, he personally came to
our house that day and blessed our son. (This Charanadasa also attended that
function).
In another instance, my neighbor who
was a Muslim insisted that he would accompany me on a visit to Guruantha’s
house. He had got a job in Dubai. However his visa was getting delayed. He
wanted to seek Gurunatha’s grace to resolve this. As soon as we entered
Guruantha’s house, Gurunatha spoke to my friend and said “Why did you come here
today? Tomorrow your visa is going to come. You need to go to Dubai isn’t it?”
My friend was awestruck thinking how Gurunatha could answer a question that was
still in his thoughts; he bowed at Gurunatha’s feet.
I got a few plots as an inheritance
from my father. When Gurunatha happened to visit the place he asked me what I
was planning to do with the land. I told him “Whatever you instruct me to do”.
Then he said I should build a marriage hall. Though we were not financially
very sound, we finished the task by taking a bank loan. But due to acute
financial crunch I could not repay the loan in time and the bank took
possession of the marriage hall. When I told about the problem to Gurunatha, he
only said “You need not worry when I am here” and sent me back.
“Today thanks to Gurunatha’s grace
we are free of all debts. I am leading my life thinking that the only purpose
of my life is to execute the instructions I receive from Gurunatha and likewise
Gurunatha would be alerting us in our dreams whenever we are to face any
difficulty and tell us the way forward. There is nothing more I can ask for“.
Tears rolled down from his eyes when he concluded.
