Chapter 5: Blessings for the woman president
India had a woman president when
this anecdote happened. She was coming down to Sringeri to have Guru Darshana.
Considering her security limited entry passes were issued, which enabled about
forty VIPs and other important dignitaries to have darshana along with her.
Security personnel had a big deployment in the town and had her path covered to
the teeth, it was difficult for a commoner even to see the president from a
distance.
Gurunatha was in Sakharaya Patna on
that day. He made me call a devotee couple in Sringeri and instructed them to
hand over a saree, a blouse and a few other ornaments to the president this is
a traditional way of exchanging pleasantries among womenfolk in south India and
is called ‘Bagina’. The couple expressed their helplessness in carrying out his
instructions due to tight security around the president. Gurunatha asked them
to stand at a specific place in her pathway and said she would be able to see
them and collect the Bagina. The couple tried but narrowly missed to get a
glance from the president. After a while couple returned home disappointed.
Gurunatha made me call them again to inform, they should hand over the Bagina
to one person in Sharada temple and he in turn will be able to get it across to
the president. Couple went to Sharada temple to carry out the instructions.
Security personnel promptly checked all the contents but later refused to
accept the Bagina. Just then the president walked out to their surprise and
accepted the gift. The whole episode must have taken close to about two hours.
Gurunatha was in constant touch with that couple till the task was completed. His
patience and determination on that day taught us a few lessons.
Later on I noticed whenever
Gurunatha sent someone on some task/job he sat still, until the person who was
sent informed him about the accomplishment of the task and/or his safe return.
When asked about this, Gurunatha
only replied... “That is called Guru, isn’t it?”
